The County of Los Angeles Public Library . Last year, the county's Families For Literacy Program served 1,000 families and helped 1,500 children build home libraries, officials said. This year, participating families will receive free books and family reading packets that include skill-building activity sheets and tips on how parents can promote reading in their homes. In addition, parents and children will be encouraged to attend family reading workshops. To qualify for the literacy program, parents must have one child 5 or younger. The program runs from January through June. While children participate in reading-related activities, parents can take part in discussion groups and discover how they can make a difference in their community through reading. ``This is a great program,'' said Reyes. ``This is what the library is all about.'' |
