"With market liberalization all over the continent to follow, the LHS billing system BSCS is the most installed billing and customer care solution on the African continent" comments LHS Sales Director (Europe/ Middle East/ Afrika), Frank van Gumpel.

According to a Financial Times survey, African telecom markets are expected to increase to $11 billion by the year 2000 from roughly $2 billion at present. The International Telecommunication Union International Telecommunication Union (ITU), specialized agency of the United Nations, with headquarters at Geneva. It was created in 1934 as a result of the merging of the International Telegraph Union (est.  (ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks. ) expects cellular subscribers to grow by about 100 % from about one million in 1997 to two million in 1998.

"The potential for market growth is clearly extraordinary in this region, with Africa having one eighth of the world's population and only 2% of its telephone lines" states Frank van Gumpel. "On one hand, structural problems in Africa, such as a low teledensity, different languages even within national borders as well as critical issues, such as cash collection and revenue assurance pose a special challenge to billing and customer care - but on the other hand, offer the opportunity to `leapfrog' to more advanced technologies, which are more flexible, scaleable and functional such as the LHS solution BSCS."

Its over 120 systems are installed in more than 50 countries, operating in 13 languages.
