LG&E SELLS 12.88 PERCENT OF TRIMBLE COUNTY PLANT TO INDIANA MUNICIPAL POWER AGENCY

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Louisville Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: LOU) (LG&E) and the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) announced today that IMPA has acquired a 12.88 percent ownership interest in LG&E's Trimble County generating unit. The sale completes LG&E's plan to sell 25 percent of this state-of-the-art generating unit not included in LG&E's customer rate base.
The new agreement replaces the unit power-purchase agreement between LG&E and IMPA, which was signed in December 1991 and which included an option for IMPA to purchase the 12.88 percent ownership interest in the unit. IMPA's ownership interest represents 63.75 megawatts of the unit's generating capacity of 495 megawatts.
LG&E had previously sold a 12.12 percent ownership interest in the unit to the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency in early 1991.
The Trimble County plant, which began commercial operation in December 1990, is the newest of LG&E's coal-fired plants, all of which are equipped with sulfur-dioxide removal systems, or scrubbers. The plants already comply with the Clean Air Act Amendments for sulfur dioxide emissions beyond the year 2000.
IMPA is a political subdivision of the state of Indiana. The agency, which is based in Carmel, Indiana, is made up of 31 municipalities that have joined together to meet their long-term electric power needs.
Louisville Gas and Electric Company is the regulated electric and natural gas utility subsidiary of LG&E Energy Corp. (NYSE: LGE), an energy-services company headquartered in Louisville. LG&E provides electric services to 332,000 customers and natural gas to 254,000 customers in Louisville and adjacent areas in Kentucky. The company's service territory covers 700 square miles in 17 counties.
