LG&E ENERGY CORP. RECORDS 17.6 PERCENT INCREASE IN 3RD QUARTER EARNINGS PER SHARE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Spurred by record utility power sales, LG&E Energy Corp.'s (NYSE: LGE) third quarter 1993 earnings per share of common stock were $1.07, a 17.6 percent increase over the 91 cents earned during the same period in 1992.
The company's third quarter earnings increased to $35 million, from $29.5 million in the same period last year. Revenues for the three months ended September 30, 1993, were $221 million, an increase of five percent over revenues of $210 million in the same period one year ago. Third quarter earnings also reflect a $1 million expense, or 3 cents a share, to reflect higher federal income tax rates effective retroactively to January 1993.
The company's utility, Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E), contributed $1.07 to consolidated earnings per share, compared with 85 cents for the same period in 1992. The increase in earnings resulted from LG&E's 11 percent growth in electric sales to retail customers, which was driven by warmer than usual summer weather, and strict cost management.
LG&E Energy Corp.'s non-utility businesses contributed 8 cents to consolidated earnings per share for the third quarter 1993, as compared to 11 cents per share for the third quarter 1992. Non-utility earnings per share for the nine-month period ended September 30, 1993 were up 4 cents per share compared with the same period last year.
LG&E Energy Corp. consolidated earnings per share year to date were $2.23, a 21 percent increase over earnings per share for the same period last year. Revenues for the nine-month period ended September 30, 1993 were $660 million compared with $604 million for the same period ended September 30, 1992.
