LEVI STRAUSS APPOINTS PETE JACOBI PRESIDENT OF LEVI STRAUSS INTERNATIONAL

SAN FRANCISCO, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.) has appointed Pete Jacobi as the new president of Levi Strauss International (LSI), the wholly owned subsidiary that manages the company's international business.
As LSI president, Jacobi will be responsible for the approximately 8,000 employees and numerous business partners in 60 countries, who in 1992 produced more than half the company's earnings.
Jacobi, a 23-year veteran at LS&CO., has been the company's president of Global Sourcing since 1991. Prior to this, he was president of LS&CO.'s European businesses from 1988-91.
"Pete brings a wealth of international expertise and talent to his new position, as well as the qualities of passionate leadership and candid communication," said Tom Tusher, LS&CO.'s president and chief operating officer. "He's an ideal candidate to face the new and exciting challenges of making LS&CO. a truly global company, and to expand our leadership in the international markets in which we compete."
As president of Global Sourcing, Jacobi spearheaded the effort to develop and implement the industry-leading terms of engagement and country selection guidelines for the company's contractors worldwide, which define standards for the company's sourcing decisions.
He also has been instrumental in maximizing the competitive advantage of the company's domestic production operations through major change initiatives, including team manufacturing, which abandons the traditional system of piecework in favor of self-managed teams of cross-trained sewing operators. Jacobi also directed the company's latest effort, Levi's F.A.S.T. (Finishing and Sewing Teams), which links dedicated teams of mills, finishing centers, sewing plants and customer service centers to improve production efficiency and decrease manufacturing cycle times. Under his leadership as president of Levi Strauss Europe, the division became one of LS&CO.'s strongest performers, setting records in both sales and earnings.
Since joining LS&CO. in 1970, Jacobi has worked in the Jeanswear Division as a production line manager, a merchandising assistant, a product manager, a merchandising manager and a general merchandise manager. In 1980 he was promoted to Jeanswear vice president and general manager of Regular Jeans. He was appointed president of the U.S. Youthwear division in 1981, and executive vice president of the Jeans Co. in 1984. He then became president of U.S. Men's Jeans prior to his appointment as president of Levi Strauss Europe in 1988.
Jacobi, 49, is a native of San Francisco and a graduate of San Jose State University.
LS&CO. is the world's largest apparel manufacturer with 1992 sales of $5.6 billion. The company makes and markets Levi's(R) jeans and casual sportswear for men, women and children. The company employs about 34,200 worldwide.
