IN YOUR DECEMBER 1999 ARTICLE ENTItled, "It's the Economy, Stupid "The economy, stupid," was a phrase in American politics widely used during Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign against George H.W. Bush. For a time, Bush was considered unbeatable because of foreign policy developments such as the end of the Cold War and the ," about the Chilean presidential elections, you stated than the two leading candidates sound like boring small-town mayors, gobbling down empanadas and chatting about job creation and health care. If candidates do not talk about creating jobs and better health services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract  in order to avoid sounding like boring mayors, what should they talk about? Are these not real issues in our societies?

Also, you stated that most observers and the polls don't give presidential candidate Joaquin Lavin much of a chance at victory and that he will mostly be planning for the 2006 elections. You neglected to take into account polls taken by Geminis and la Fundaci6n Futuro that had for some time predicted a close race between the two candidates. Lavin's 47.52% versus Lagos's 47.96% in the December 12 elections seem to contradict your assertions.
