CANCER RATES CLUE TO BEST HEALTH CARE

As a cancer survivor, I cannot support the proposed health care reform bill. We know that early detection is the key to surviving cancer. We have been told to be our own advocate and insist on further testing if we are not satisfied with the diagnosis. How many lives have been saved because patients sought a second or even third opinion?

The cancer survival rate in the U.S. is well above that of Canada and England. In the U.S., breast- and prostate-cancer survival rates are around 90 percent, whereas in Canada, the survival rate is less than 60 percent. Statistics for other cancers are similar.

Under this "reform," we can expect delays in getting appointments and the elimination of "unnecessary" tests. The result? We'll see more radical surgeries at advanced stages of cancer and reduced quality of life for survivors. More importantly, we are risking an increased death rate.

The 'W' word

On July 26, Mike Marshall's Letter, "Share tax burden," claimed that President Barack Obama's stimulus package was a "new scheme to turn the IRS An abbreviation for the Internal Revenue Service, a federal agency charged with the responsibility of administering and enforcing internal revenue laws.  into a welfare program," and that under the plan "more than 50 percent of American citizens will pay no net federal taxes starting next year."

This letter is largely a rehash re·hash

The writer makes several errors by omission. First, these tax credits represent a one-time stimulus, not permanent tax-code changes. Second, it's a mistake to say that these taxpayers are not paying for the costs of government, because the vast majority of them pay Social Security/Medicare taxes, as well as federal excise taxes. Finally, Sen. John McCain called for similar tax credits during the 2008 campaign, only he called them "reform" in contrast to Obama's "welfare."

Protected

and served

I have lived in Santa Fe my whole life. I have had occasion, as have many other residents, to contact the Santa Fe Police Department for assistance, as I did recently.

The officer who assisted me was like a prototype for the "hero" model that police are supposed to be. He treated me like a person worthy of his time and effort, like I was a priority. And his help was invaluable.

I always feel that way about SFPD SFPD San Francisco Police Department
SFPD Supplemental Food Programs Division (USDA)
SFPD School Facilities Planning Division (California)
SFPD San Fierro Police Department

Bad neighbor policy
