LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE GETTING TERMINOLOGY CORRECT FOR TEENA.

Dear L.A. Life: I take exception to the use of the term ``charming, confused cross-dresser,'' used by Glenn Whipp to describe Hilary Swank's character in ``Boys Don't Cry'' (Daily News, March 27). It's a cutesy cute·sy

phrase for what is a complex character, and is, in fact, inaccurate. Teena Brandon, the true-life subject of the film, dressed as a boy because she wanted to be a boy. My understanding of the term ``cross-dresser'' does not include such an inclination, whatever its own complexities are.

And Hilary Swank's Oscar win was not an upset over Annette Bening Annette Carol Bening (born May 29, 1958) is a Golden Globe-, BAFTA- and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning American actress. Biography

, as indicated by your headline. Having won a Golden Globe and numerous film critics awards, she came to Oscar poised as a front-runner. She carried that honor with dignity and grace.

The film itself was a study in character. Its images remain powerful, uncompromising in in their emotional truth. Swank inhabited Brandon, and every ache was real.

I'm thankful ``Boys Don't Cry'' got made. Don't call it what it's not - an irony Brandon might appreciate, if only he were here.

Stop griping about Oscar show - you know you like it

Dear L.A. Life: It seems everybody complains that the Oscar show was too long. Yet year after year, we camp outside the Shrine Auditorium The Shrine Auditorium is a landmark large-event venue in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is also the headquarters of the Al Malaikah Temple, a division of the Shriners.  for days preceding the show. On Oscar day, we leave work a little early to catch the preshow. We don't cook but order takeout and glue our eyes to the TV to watch the show. We then watch its highlights on the evening news and read about it the next morning. We could care less who may win the award for some of those trivial categories. Nevertheless, we love to see the emcee, the presenters, the stars and their companions. The more the better. Thank heaven the show was long. We wanted it to be long.

No support for local actor in 'God, the Devil and Bob'

When I heard the voice of James Garner coming out of the cartoon in the character of God, I was surprised and dazed as well. Editor's note: NBC confirms that ``God, the Devil and Bob'' has been pulled from its schedule because of poor ratings in the 8:30 p.m. Tuesday time slot. In its most recent airing, the show averaged just 6 million viewers.
