LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE : JOYNER DESERVES MENTION IN MORNING-RADIO PANTHEON.Regarding your article ``Early Risers: Readers Sound Off on Morning Radio'' (April 19, L.A. Life), you neglected to mention one of the most popular morning shows in the nation - ``The Tom Joyner Thomas "Tom" Joyner (born November 23, 1949) is an American radio host. His daily program, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, is syndicated across the United States and heard by over ten million radio listeners. He is married to fitness guru Donna Richardson. Morning Show.'' His show also heads up a fund-raising campaign Noun 1. fund-raising campaign - a campaign to raise money for some cause fund-raising drive, fund-raising effort crusade, campaign, cause, drive, effort, movement - a series of actions advancing a principle or tending toward a particular end; "he supported called ``Dollars for Scholars'' in which money is raised for college students. So, not only is he showcasing his talents as ``The Hardest Working Man in Radio,'' fly-jock Joyner and his team are philanthropists. I thought Los Angeles should know that radio is more than just vulgarity and boring talk. - Vickie Reece Van Nuys What's in a name (or label) not to be taken lightly In the discussion about the causes of homosexual behavior, it appears that merely not subscribing to the genetic determination theory earns the label of ``homophobe ho·mo·pho·bi·a n. 1. Fear of or contempt for lesbians and gay men. 2. Behavior based on such a feeling. [homo(sexual) + -phobia. .'' That is unfortunate. Marshall Kass (April 19, L.A. Life letters) appears to fail to distinguish between genetic determinations and genetic predisposition genetic predisposition Molecular medicine The tendency to suffer from certain genetic diseases–eg, Huntington's disease, or inherit certain skills–eg, musical talent . The two conditions are different. If you have no choice in something, such as eye color, that is genetic determination. If you are likely to have a condition, such as family tendency toward heart disease, that is genetic predisposition. The usual claim asserted for homosexual behavior is that there is no choice, hence the behavior is genetically determined. Both letter writers Marshall Kass and Sheila M. Cooley refer to things that may happen in the development of identical twin fetuses, which will result in differences in the twins. Those things that happen are accidents of development and are rare. (Does anyone have reliable statistics on the frequency and occurrence of identical twin births in which one twin is left-handed and one is right-handed?) Do they really want to claim that developmental accidents can explain the outcome of the separated twin study of male homosexuality homosexuality, a term created by 19th cent. theorists to describe a sexual and emotional interest in members of one's own sex. Today a person is often said to have a homosexual or a heterosexual orientation, a description intended to defuse some of the long-standing ? The study does indicate some form of genetic predisposition but definitely not genetic determination. Until a definitive gene cause is found, it would be reasonable to remember that the claim of genetic determination for homosexual behavior remains a theory. Proof by frequent repetition is not scientifically valid. Those who accept the theory might exercise a little more of that highly valued tolerance and indulge in·dulge v. in·dulged, in·dulg·ing, in·dulg·es v.tr. 1. To yield to the desires and whims of, especially to an excessive degree; humor. 2. a. in less name-calling. - Robert Wilson Robert Wilson may refer to:
