LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE : COMING-OUT EPISODE OF `ELLEN' DRAWS READERS' MIXED REACTIONS.Did I miss something? When did an individual's sexual preference become so important that it should be played up in the newspapers and on TV for days on end? I don't believe that TV shows are the place to make that kind of a statement. Supposedly, TV shows, such as ``Ellen,'' are made for entertainment and that subject matter is not entertaining. Did I miss something else? Was I sleeping when the announcement was made that a cure for AIDS has finally been found? - Pat Darling Winnetka So the ``Ellen'' episode aired, May Day followed and the Earth was not swallowed up. Neither was it saved. There are some who have labeled her ``Ellen DeGenerate degenerate /de·gen·er·ate/ (de-jen´er-at) to change from a higher to a lower form. degenerate /de·gen·er·ate/ (de-jen´er-at) characterized by degeneration. ,'' hiding behind a cloak of biblical thought, as if that cloak were meant to harm, not protect. Some could counter with ``Ellen DeGenerous.'' In her ``20/20'' interview, it was revealed that gay teens are two to three times as likely to think about committing suicide. Ellen can be applauded for wanting to reach those teens, if that was her intent. But that still is about labels and none of it is the point. Sexuality is a sacred thing, regardless of where one stands personally within its fluid spectrum. Whether one is private or public in the matter, that sacredness is something we must each guard, alone, in our most profound moments. That is certainly not something we garner from any television show, any newspaper, or any forum outside ourselves and our sacredness. I'm a little sick of these groups thinking they have the right to tell U.S. companies what to show, who to hire and in what positions. If all these people are so brilliant in everything, start your own business. Fair has nothing to do with it, if so we wouldn't have had affirmative action that takes jobs from qualified persons to give to totally unqualified persons. It certainly isn't a right to have any job you want just because you're Latino, African-American, Indian, Arab or whatever. Qualified should be the name of the game, not carrying signs demonstrating and demanding. I can't stand Howard Stern, but who are Latinos or any other group to tell American businesses what they can do or not do. They don't own them. I'm tired of all the apologizing to these groups. As a viewer, I think May sweeps should be renamed VCR Month or ``Honey, do we have enough video tapes?'' ``Roseanne'' and ``Mad About You'' have both been moved around the schedule so much that now they are head to head. Do these executives really think we are going to miss Roseanne's last show or the birth of the Buchman's baby? If there are more than two shows on that we want to watch, then I coordinate with my sister and/or friends to make sure we have all the shows on tape. We can't be the only viewers that have learned how to get around this craziness. What else are we to watch until the next sweeps, reruns? Rosemarie Jasinski Chatsworth CAPTION(S): photo |
