LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE : BY-THE-NUMBERS RESPONSE TO `DR. QUINN' CANCELLATION.I am responding to the article that appeared in Wednesday's L.A. Life section titled ``CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. Defends `Quinn' cancellation.'' In this article, Les Moonves of CBS defends the ``Dr. Quinn'' cancellation by saying that ``Dr. Quinn'' had ``slipped terribly'' on the overall ratings and demographics for the second consecutive year. Here are the facts: This year ``Dr. Quinn'' slipped 9 percent from last year. ``Early Edition'' slipped 12 percent, ``The Nanny'' 12 percent, ``Cosby'' 14 percent, ``Chicago Hope'' 14 percent and ``Walker'' 15 percent. Yet all these shows, except ``Dr. Quinn,'' were renewed. ``Dr. Quinn'' fans are tired of the excuses and misrepresented facts coming from CBS. ``Dr. Quinn'' is, or was, the only great family show on TV. Fans deserve to have this show brought back as a full-time series. Also, would your newspaper and others who read the article please investigate the accuracy of this Les Moonves statement: ``We (CBS) get paid zero - not a nickel - for anybody over 55 (who watches the show).'' It may be true, but it is hard to believe. - Charles Wilkie Arleta Family-friendly `7th Heaven' draws reader accolades We say ``get good programs on TV.'' Well, Mondays on Channel 5 at 8 p.m. is a program called ``7th Heaven.'' It is fun, clean, well acted, darling children and interesting stories. It is growing and getting great accolades from grandmas to children. See it - give it a try! - Shirley Thielman Reseda Another vote against use of station `bugs' on screen Hooray for Jack Wollard of Sunland's letter (May 10, L.A. Life) concerning those dreadful TV station logos we are forced to watch ad nauseam ad nau·se·am adv. To a disgusting or ridiculous degree; to the point of nausea. [Latin ad, to + nauseam, accusative of nausea, sickness. ! And kudos to the creator of ``Drabble drab·ble tr. & intr.v. drab·bled, drab·bling, drab·bles To make or become wet and soiled by dragging; draggle. [Middle English drabelen.] ,'' who nailed the problem right well I thought. I have been waging a campaign for some time now against this practice, having sent out letters to 18 different channels in hopes of discouraging their over-kill usage of these ``bugs,'' which only leave the screen during a commercial. They are all as prominent as a priapism Priapism Definition Priapism is a rare condition that causes a persistent, and often painful, penile erection. I agree with Mr. Wollard when he said that he bets 90 percent of the viewing public hates these logos like we do. - Don Johnston For other persons of the same name, see Donald Johnston.
