LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE : BOGIE, BACALL AND A SO-CALLED HOLLYWOOD WITCH HUNT.I found Bob Strauss' article about Lauren Bacall, ``Looking good in `The Mirror' '' (L.A. Life Nov. 26), quite interesting; however I must take a strong exception to the following remarks: ``Arguably Hollywood's most admired couple, Bogie bo·gie 1 also bo·gy n. pl. bo·gies 1. One of several wheels or supporting and aligning rollers inside the tread of a tractor or tank. 2. and Baby, as they were called, were known for their complementary no-nonsense attitudes and forthright support of creative and political freedom during the dark days of the McCarthy-era witch hunts.'' I presume that Mr. Strauss is referring to November of 1947, when Bogie and Bacall, along with several other left-leaning Hollywood film stars, went to Washington, D.C., to give support to the infamous Hollywood Ten Hollywood Ten Group of U.S. movie producers, directors, and screenwriters who refused to answer questions about communist affiliations before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. when they were appearing before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. It may interest you to know that this occurred over two years before Sen. Joe McCarthy became prominent following his Wheeling, W.Va., speech on Feb. 9, 1950. Moreover, Sen. McCarthy, due to his investigative endeavors, was largely responsible for exposing several pro-Communist government employees, such as Owen Lattimore Owen Lattimore (July 29, 1900 – May 31, 1989) was a U.S. author, educator, and influential scholar of Central Asia. Van de Walle Granada Hills Eating of raw human flesh too much for network TV Several years ago, I predicted that the liberal entertainment industry's abandonment of all moral values and standards of decency and taste would cause prime-time network family TV shows to sink to the ultimate degenerate depravity of graphically depicting cannibalism cannibalism (kăn`ĭbəlĭzəm) [Span. caníbal, referring to the Carib], eating of human flesh by other humans. . After reading Beck & Smith's Nov. 20 column about `no name' Prince, I got to thinking - what do his friends and family call him. All I could come up with was ``hey you'' and decided that's the perfect name for him - Heyyou. It has a nice sound and is neato to write. Of course, he would have a lot of competition - but hey - that's OK. I'd like competition for my name. I've lived many years and have only known one other with it and know of three others. - Opal L.
