LETTERS TO L.A. LIFE : BOGIE, BACALL AND A SO-CALLED HOLLYWOOD WITCH HUNT.

I found Bob Strauss' article about Lauren Bacall, ``Looking good in `The Mirror' '' (L.A. Life Nov. 26), quite interesting; however I must take a strong exception to the following remarks: ``Arguably Hollywood's most admired couple, Bogie bo·gie 1 also bo·gy

and Baby, as they were called, were known for their complementary no-nonsense attitudes and forthright support of creative and political freedom during the dark days of the McCarthy-era witch hunts.''

I presume that Mr. Strauss is referring to November of 1947, when Bogie and Bacall, along with several other left-leaning Hollywood film stars, went to Washington, D.C., to give support to the infamous Hollywood Ten Hollywood Ten

Moreover, Sen. McCarthy, due to his investigative endeavors, was largely responsible for exposing several pro-Communist government employees, such as Owen Lattimore Owen Lattimore (July 29, 1900 – May 31, 1989) was a U.S. author, educator, and influential scholar of Central Asia.

Hardly what one would call ``witch hunts.''

Finally, both Bogie and Bacall later admitted that they had been duped, as it were, into supporting the Hollywood Ten, as every one of these seven writers, two directors, and one producer was a Communist and sent to jail for contempt of Congress Noun 1. contempt of Congress - deliberate obstruction of the operation of the federal legislative branch

Eating of raw human flesh too much for network TV

Several years ago, I predicted that the liberal entertainment industry's abandonment of all moral values and standards of decency and taste would cause prime-time network family TV shows to sink to the ultimate degenerate depravity of graphically depicting cannibalism cannibalism (kăn`ĭbəlĭzəm) [Span. caníbal, referring to the Carib], eating of human flesh by other humans. . Well, on NBC's ``Men Behaving Badly Men Behaving Badly is a British comedy, which first broadcast in 1992 on the ITV network, however moved to BBC One (and a later timeslot) from the third series onwards. It was written and created by Simon Nye. ,'' (Nov. 20, 1996) we saw a character devour a raw human organ - to rollicking rol·lick·ing

The next logical step will be a drive to implement Jonathan Swift's ``Modest Proposal,'' that we eat unwanted children. Why let the tender, delicious flesh of aborted fetuses go to waste when it can be used to boost ratings?

Formerly known as Prince, maybe better as Heyyou?

After reading Beck & Smith's Nov. 20 column about `no name' Prince, I got to thinking - what do his friends and family call him. All I could come up with was ``hey you'' and decided that's the perfect name for him - Heyyou. It has a nice sound and is neato to write.

Of course, he would have a lot of competition - but hey - that's OK. I'd like competition for my name. I've lived many years and have only known one other with it and know of three others.
