Preserve McKenzie old growth

The new year is a time for resolutions. Hopefully, the U.S. Forest Service has made some, as the McKenzie District continues to auction off ancient forests along the McKenzie River For rivers name "Mackenzie", see .
The McKenzie River is a tributary of the Willamette River, 86 miles (138 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the Cascade Range east of Eugene into the southernmost end of the Willamette Valley.

It is stunning to think that the Forest Service is continuing to further degrade upstream water quality by logging some of the last remaining native forest left in the watershed. These forests are very important to the health of the watershed and the economic security of many small businesses.

Season of kindness is over

I guess the season of compassion and kindness is over, so now we can go back to bashing the poor and the homeless.

Don't let them ask for change at busy intersections.

Paint "no trespassing-no soliciting" signs on curbs without checking with authorities or with the free speech ruling of the Oregon Court of Appeals The Oregon Court of Appeals is the state intermediate appellate court in the U.S. state of Oregon. Except for death penalty cases, which are reserved to the Oregon Supreme Court, and tax court cases, it has jurisdiction to hear all civil and criminal appeals from circuit courts, . Are some of our police officers (Register-Guard, Jan. 7 and 8) no longer operating within the law?

It's cold and wet out there, and it's even colder and wetter if you are homeless. We often hand a buck out the window - with a note listing agencies offering help to the hungry and homeless - to people asking for help at Seventh Avenue and Chambers Street Chambers Street is a street in Edinburgh, Scotland, at south of the Old Town. The street is named after William Chambers of Glenormiston, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh who was the main proponent of the 1867 Edinburgh Improvement Act, which gave permission for the street's  or 11th Avenue and Chambers. If the signal changes to green while we are doing this, I doubt we delay the traffic behind us more than five seconds.

Let's be human, even while driving. Perhaps the city could provide pull-out spots near busy intersections to make it easier for such small acts of mercy.

If we lived closer to nature, none of this would surprise us, and we would not be wondering about an appropriate response. We would be like those tribal islanders who felt the feelings, read the signs, then struck out for higher ground.

And once there, we would have no question about the proper attitude toward nature: reverence, awe, humility.

Boxer stands up for the people

Questions that come to mind for a modern American are: What is it that we stand for? What are American values?

Something that I believe many Americans can respect is the desire to stand up against injustice and manipulation.

When Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and members of the House of Representatives stood up to question the presidential voting process and its outcome in Ohio, are they not looking more deeply into injustices and manipulations of what may have occurred in our system of governing? Were they speaking out for those who raised concerns about a system of the government that used to be "of the people, by the people, and for the people?"

What is it about this president that has caused there to be two consecutive national elections that raise questions about tampering, fraud or misrepresentation misrepresentation

In law, any false or misleading expression of fact, usually with the intent to deceive or defraud. It most commonly occurs in insurance and real-estate contracts. False advertising may also constitute misrepresentation.
?

I for one would like to commend members of our government when they step up to the plate to speak and fight for the people of our nation.

Pledge could be modernized

There is no need to eliminate the Pledge of Allegiance Pledge of Allegiance, in full, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, oath that proclaims loyalty to the United States. and its national symbol.  from our public schools. It just needs a few small changes to modernize it.

"I will not pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The name of this country. The United States, now thirty-one in number, are Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, , or to the republic for which it stands, unless it becomes one nation, without God, divisible DIVISIBLE. Comprehensive approach works

The report by Rep. Henry Waxman exposing government-funded abstinence-only programs as misleading, ineffective and irresponsible has spawned a flurry of discussion in editorial pages around the country.

Both national and local surveys consistently show overwhelming parent support for comprehensive sex education in schools. The definition of a comprehensive approach calls for teaching skills that support making thoughtful and healthy decisions about sex throughout one's lifetime - including the choice to say no or yes.

The importance of family communication about sex is also revealed in research, including a new survey released by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, in which teens say their parents (37 percent) influence their decisions about sex more than friends (33 percent) or the media (5 percent). In this debate over sex education, let's not forget to support parents in talking with their children about sexual issues and sharing factual information along with their personal values.

Don't alter Social Security

My family, my employees and I are panicked by the government's threat to dismantle Social Security.

For 19 years I have run a successful service business and have 40 employees.

We, as a group, pay Social Security taxes with the understanding that those taxes are funding our bottom-line retirement plan.

Many of us have not benefited from investments in mutual funds and the stock market.

We receive a notice from the Social Security Administration that quotes us a benefit level if we retire at a certain age.

I see this arrangement as a contract and expect the funds promised to be there when I retire. Changing the arrangement now will be tantamount to a breach of contract.

I understand that they may have the legal right to lower our benefits, but that does not change how I feel.

If the government was not wasting our money on a needless war in Iraq or on weapons development programs, we would not be having this discussion.

We need to carefully prioritize spending so that the middle class is not thrown to the wolves over the next 15 years.

LTD LTD 1 Laron-type dwarfism 2 Leukotriene D 3 Long-term depression, see there 4. Long-term disability  parties should compromise

In response to the Jan. 7 article on the Lane Transit District negotiations: I am a seventh-grade student at the Network Charter School.

Our school uses the LTD bus system instead of a normal school bus. I use the LTD bus system to get to and from school, so the bus drivers going on strike would greatly affect me.

I think that the union has a good point, that its members do need good health care benefits.

If I were in their position, I would do the same thing.

It seems to me that the union was willing to give up a lot of other stuff for good health care benefits, but it still couldn't convince the LTD administration to give employees more health care.

I heard the union said that it cares about the riders, but if it really does, then it shouldn't go on strike because that would affect all of the riders.

Also, not all people would be able to get to work or school easily without the bus.

I think that they - the union and administration - could easily just meet in the middle of both of their offers. A compromise would be the easy solution.
