Smith's Iraq stand is expedient

Sen. Gordon Smith's recent defection from being a long-standing supporter of President Bush's shameful Iraq war Iraq War: see under Persian Gulf Wars.

 expedient (Register-Guard, July 20).

A few days ago I received an invitation from Smith to a $1,000 ($2,300 for photo option) luncheon in Portland with Sen. John McCain For McCain's grandfather and father, see John S. McCain, Sr. and John S. McCain, Jr., respectively

to raise funds for McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. McCain is the most pro-Iraq war advocate in the Senate and wants to greatly escalate the war. Smith's support of McCain's candidacy clearly debunks the honesty of his recent anti-Iraq war statements.

Both Smith and McCain need to be soundly defeated so our country can start regaining the respect and honor we lost by our disgraceful act of war in Iraq.

Religion informs Bush's politics

One phrase in Kevin Cape's opinion, "Turkey's secularism sec·u·lar·ism

is threatened" (Register-Guard, July 15), caught my eye and mind - "as voices from God never mix well with the necessities of political compromise."

This is not only true in Europe and the Middle East but it has been demonstrated to be true here in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . The Bush regime has pushed its religious beliefs ahead of science, the benefits of society's well being in health and sex education as well as its disregard of our laws and the backbone of this country - the Constitution.

A man who feels he is above the laws of the land, is right no matter what, never admits to a mistake and has his God - with whom he talks - on his side is a very frightening person to be in charge of a democracy.

The fear a lot of us feel is not coming from the Middle East but from Washington, D.C. We can be terrorized and feel helpless as our freedoms and laws are slowly dismantled all in the name of national security.

Voters want a new direction

Last November, the voters of America sent an unequivocal message to Congress: Change the course this country has followed under the madness of the Bush/neocon administration.

Our Democratic representatives and senators have been trying to do just that, but they have been blocked time after time by die-hard Republicans who tried to thwart minimum wage reform, have successfully derailed immigration reform and now are continuing to hold our troops captive in a can't-win civil war in Iraq Parameter not given Error...

We elected what we thought would be new leadership, but the Old Guard hangers-on are cynically obstructing that new direction, hoping that we will get frustrated with the Democrats and blame them for Congress' failure to budge this intransigent administra- tion.

Don't let them fool you. This time, the Democrats have it right and the Old Guard is flat out wrong. The era of Tom Delay-style back-door deal-brokering and payoffs is over. Hurray for the Democrats who have finally found the courage to hold Republicans publicly accountable for their parliamentary shenanigans shenanigans

Let us hope more Republicans follow the lead of Gordon Smith, Chuck Hagel, Olympia Snowe and other reasonable GOP members who understand the wisdom of changing course when the ship of state is about to run aground.
