Fire district conflict must end

Once again, Karen McCowan has reported the sadness in the South Lane Fire and Rescue District that covers Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery).  and Creswell.

The termination of a chief is difficult on the one being terminated, as well as on those people who support him and the ones he has tried to lead. It becomes heartache for the families and the patrons of the district.

It is time for the vindictive statements, rumors and half-truths to stop. The district is essentially destroyed, but savable, if some of the cancers are searched out and eliminated.

Here lies the problem for the new chief to sort out: There are disruptive forces on both ends of the district. Most of the negativity I have seen is from the south toward the north. No easy task for a new chief. This should be addressed in the interim by an experienced manager-chief. When the hatchet hatchet: see tomahawk.  work is accomplished and the district put on an even keel, a permanent new chief may come in and win back the confidence of the crews and voters.

But the vindictive statements from the citizens that appear in print - statements that are innuendos, maybe based on half-truths - will only continue to drive the wedge deeper between the two distinctive factions that are spread out over the entire district.

There is more to being a board member than sitting in a chair. Personal friendships and biases must be put aside and decisions must be made for the safety and welfare of the crews and what is best for the patrons of the district.

Lakeridge Estates isn't for sale

The story, "A critical crossroads" (Register-Guard, June 10), was a piece on the proposed McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center site and the impact this will have on traffic and the surrounding area and neighborhood.

Most of the information seemed statistic-based and informative except in the second column on Page A17, starting with, "Allowing commercial development on the property could cause the owner of Lakeridge Estates, a nearby manufactured home park, to seek the conversion of his property to commercial uses too, residents said."

I am a real estate broker, and these two paragraphs cost me a sale that weekend in the park.

I have sold six homes in this park in the last two years and, in my due diligence Research; analysis; your homework. This term has caught on in all industries, because it sounds so "wired." Who would want to do analysis or research when they can do due diligence. See wired.  for my clients, I have talked to the management of the park extensively. He has consistently said Lakeridge is not for sale!

These resident representatives who oppose the hospital are using Lakeridge as a ploy to support their own agenda. They are not doing the residents of Lakeridge any good and, in my opinion, they are devaluing their homes now. They need to stop bringing up their speculative opinion of what the owner of Lakeridge Estates intends to do with the park.

Religion fuels evolution critique

Darrin Yeager's June 9 letter, "Five flaws in evolution theory," is less of an indictment of the scientific community's overwhelming support for evolution than it is an example of Yeager's profound misunderstanding of the scientific method and evolutionary theory
''This article is about the creole theory. You may be looking for the concept of biological evolution. For other uses, see Evolution (disambiguation).

Main article: Creole language
The evolutionary perspective
.

Yeager's letter is typical of the false arguments that periodically turn up in The Register-Guard. I find it odd that Yeager did not include the real reason why he does not accept evolution, namely, evolution theory runs counter to his particular set of religious beliefs. Let us take a quick look at his implied objections.

Matter can (not) come from nothing. In general, this statement is true. However, there is every reason to think that the Big Bang big bang

Model of the origin of the universe, which holds that it emerged from a state of extremely high temperature and density in an explosive expansion 10 billion–15 billion years ago.
provides an exception to this rule. Regardless of the answer, this says nothing about the validity of the process of evolution through natural selection.

Explosions (do not) produce order. Again, this statement is true. And once again, this is neither an argument against the Big Bang nor evolution. It is incorrect to compare the Big Bang to an explosion in the normal sense of the word.

Nonliving material can (not) become alive. This is an odd statement considering the fact that living organisms are fundamentally composed of nonliving material.

Yeager's assertion that species can (not) change and there are few transitional forms is simply a complete denial of the evidence. I refer Yeager to the Web site talkorigins.org, where he can begin to answer this question for himself.

Republican tactics disgraceful

I was appalled at the disgraceful ad the Oregon Republican Party The Oregon Republican Party is the state affiliate of the national Republican Party in Oregon. I have filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission Federal Communications Commission (FCC), independent executive agency of the U.S. government established in 1934 to regulate interstate and foreign communications in the public interest.  about the robo-calls, because they do not identify whom they are from. I think it may be time for rank-and-file Republicans and Democrats to take back their parties and restore them to the position of honor they deserve.

Potter's criticism unwarranted

Unbelievable! Portland Mayor Tom Potter Tom Potter is the Mayor of the city of Portland, Oregon in the United States. He was elected in 2004, and his term ends in 2008; Potter has announced that he does not intend to seek re-election. Prior to his service as mayor, he was Portland's police chief.  is critical of the feds for rounding up the 600 illegals and finding that only 8 percent (48) had legal Social Security numbers! I wonder what other lawbreaking schemes Potter supports.

I don't have a problem with the folks who are just trying to earn a living and raise a family, but I do have a problem with people who deceive, lie and deliberately break the law. And for a public official to criticize law enforcement (and basically say that breaking the law is OK) is despicable.

I hope the voters remember if Potter runs for re-election. Oregon is a very liberal state and Portland is worse. When will people wake up to reality? We cannot condone condone v. 1) to forgive, support, and/or overlook moral or legal failures of another without protest, with the result that it appears that such breaches of moral or legal duties are acceptable.  what went on at Del Monte.

Measure 37 is about cashing in

I was amused by Aaron Jones' letter on June 13. I challenge the assumption that Jones and the rest of the property rights crowd assert that the evil government swept in overnight and abrogated the rights of poor old Mom and Pop Mom and Pop

I live on a lot that was created in the early 1980s by the previous owners. They saw the land use regulations changing on the horizon and cut their holdings in half before the changes arrived like a steamroller stuck in low gear. If all the other poor people Jones refers to were of a like mind, they could have done the same thing. Not all of us can afford to drop five grand for a full-page letter to the editor like Jones and the other deep-pocket Measure 37 contributors.

GOP attack ads will backfire

I can't believe it! There was yet another expensive attack ad on this rookie legislator LEGISLATOR. One who makes laws.

Some friends and I could normally care less, but these ads have motivated us to encourage everyone we know in his district to vote for Edwards when he runs for re-election - just to show these political hacks that while smear tactics might work some of the time, they've taken it to a new low.

Sorry, we aren't that stupid.

Employers must obey the law

The June 13 edition of The Register-Guard reported an immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important.  raid at the Fresh Del Monte plant in Portland that resulted in the arrest of 167 illegal immigrants.

These immigrants now face deportation. No mention was made of Fresh Del Monte's responsibility to adequately screen these employees when hired.

If we're serious about the stemming of illegals, we have to ask ourselves why millions of Latinos are willing to risk their lives in horrendously difficult border crossings. It's because they can get jobs! Eliminate the jobs and the illegal border traffic will stop. If we make the penalties for companies and individuals that hire illegals tough enough, the hiring will cease, and the illegal border crossings will stop.

No jobs, no crossings. If we don't eliminate the job opportunities, no amount of barriers, border guards or National Guard troops will dampen the determination of the desperate immigrants.
