The statistics involving our youth and deaths related to alcohol use are very alarming, as Furtado stated. MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. Studies show that with efforts to delay drinking until age 21, youth are less likely to become alcohol dependent and drinking drivers in the future. The 21 minimum drinking age Noun 1. drinking age - the age at which is legal for a person to buy alcoholic beverages eld, age - a time of life (usually defined in years) at which some particular qualification or power arises; "she was now of school age"; "tall for his eld" law saves enough lives each year to fill South Eugene High School's auditorium nearly 2.5 times. Traffic crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens and a third of those deaths involves alcohol. Alcohol kills more young people than all illicit drugs combined, and underage drinking costs society $62 billion annually. Why does this continue? The answer, in part, is that 30 percent to 50 percent of high school students report obtaining alcohol from adults. Adults must be held responsible for providing alcohol to minors. In addition, parents need to be parents by not allowing alcohol parties at home. If teens are drinking at home, they are drinking other places that present increased risks. We appreciate Lynne Furtado for caring about her peers and sharing her concerns. After all, they'll get a head start if they leave college debt-free. One way I save is the Oregon College Savings 529 Plan. Right now, Oregonians get a tax break from the first $2,000 they contribute to the plan each year, saving an average family about $180 in Oregon income taxes. I'd like readers to know that the Oregon Legislature is now considering House Bill 2462, which would double this amount - and the tax savings - bringing the limit to $4,000. Many of the families I know have tight budgets and like to be tax savvy so they contribute up to the $2,000, but I think they would contribute more if the limit were higher. Oregon families might invest as much as $300 million more in saving for their children's future education needs each year. Imagine, Oregon citizens voluntarily invest $300 million more in Oregon's future and feel good about it. Wow. I hope readers will call their legislators and urge them to vote yes on HB 2462. BEN UTLEY Eugene EWEB EWEB Eugene Water and Electric Board (Oregon) better as separate entity I've met Bill Kloos and know him to be very bright. That's why I'm surprised to see him advocate for something so dumb as having the Eugene City Council take over running Eugene Water & Electric Board. I guess he thinks city councilors have a lot of free time available to learn the electricity and water business. If Kloos wants the elected EWEB commissioners to be aligned with his priorities, he needs to run for that office or support other candidates sharing his beliefs. Should voters reject his candidates, then his problem is not with how EWEB is structured but with how the community isn't convinced of his priorities. A great thing about EWEB's independence from the city is that citizens vote for candidates who are focused on EWEB. If run by the City Council, people would vote based on road and tax issues; a candidate's EWEB views would be incidental to their campaign. That's exactly why Eugene's mayor advocated the formation of a separate EWEB governing body Noun 1. governing body - the persons (or committees or departments etc.) who make up a body for the purpose of administering something; "he claims that the present administration is corrupt"; "the governance of an association is responsible to its members"; "he back in 1908. TOM SANTEE Eugene Credit nonprofit watchdogs Citizens should appreciate The Register-Guard's coverage of important environmental health issues such as problems with plastic baby bottles, ground and air contamination in the River Road and Trainsong neighborhoods, Willamette Valley field burning and pesticide dangers. The newspaper's reporters provide us with vital background material and information from local residents who believe they've been adversely impacted. Counterpoint from lobbyists, industrial representatives and local officials is also included. Sometimes missing, however, is a description of how these issues surfaced in the first place. There is public advocacy going on all the time, quietly and effectively, by local nonprofits who watch out for the greater good. For the topics listed above, the Oregon Toxics Alliance has consistently been there to build grassroots support around issues that receive short shrift from the Legislature or local decision-makers. They focus on bringing information to the public, our elected officials and state agencies on threats to health and homestead from often overlooked pollution. I know the same is true for the local work of the Many Rivers chapter of Sierra Club Sierra Club, national organization in the United States dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the world's parks, wildlife, and wilderness areas. Founded (1892) in California by a group led by the Scottish-American conservationist John Muir, the Sierra Club and Citizens for Public Accountability. It is my hope that The Register-Guard will give credit where credit is due, within its policy of dispassionate dis·pas·sion·ate adj. Devoid of or unaffected by passion, emotion, or bias. See Synonyms at fair1. dis·pas and even-handed reporting. Many other readers would benefit from knowing who to call for more information. Oregon Toxics Alliance has been there for us on a wide range of issues that make a difference in the livability of our shared community. Let's not leave out that part of the equation in news reporting. SALLY NUNN Eugene Article ignored the best option What a strange world we live in. Or I should say, what a strange world our media tells us we live in. The lengthy and prominent article, "Baby bottle battle" (Register-Guard, June 11) totally ignores a most crucial issue of infant feeding in the 21st century. The issue is truly not "glass or plastic." What "environmental health advocates recommend" has little to do with polycarbonates polycarbonates, group of clear, thermoplastic polymers used mainly as molding compounds (see plastic). Polycarbonates are prepared by the reaction of an aromatic difunctional phenol with either phosgene or an aromatic or aliphatic carbonate. , polyethylenes or poly-anythings. The truly environmentally sound container for the perfect infant nourishment is soft, attractive, nurturing and multipurposed. It keeps the milk up high, where the cats can't get it. When used as directed, it is never empty. And in the end, it is 100 percent biodegradable. Just ask any baby which they'd prefer. JUDY MIEGER Cottage Grove Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. bill is a disaster The Register-Guard's new columnist, Ruben Navarrette, apparently supports Senate Bill 1348, the immigration measure currently stalled in the U.S. Senate. Among other provisions, this bill would: Grant immediate amnesty to nearly all the 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the United States through a "Z Visa." Triple the rate of chain migration to about 750,000 per year for a decade. Open the door to hundreds of thousands of additional "guest workers" who would bring their families, produce "anchor babies" and further depress American wages. Allow attorneys from federally funded Legal Services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client. to represent criminal aliens who are fighting deportation. Require agents who apprehend illegals to assist them in filling out applications for Z Visas. These are just some of the gems within the hundreds of pages of this bill. Sen. Ron Wyden and President Bush support the measure. Sen. Gordon Smith at least voted against cloture The procedure by which debate is formally ended in a meeting or legislature so that a vote may be taken. Cloture is a means of terminating a filibuster, which is a prolonged speech on the floor of the Senate designed to forestall legislative action. , thereby helping to temporarily stall the bill. However, the reason many Republicans opposed cloture was because of an amendment that reduced the number of guest workers from the original plan! They want cheap labor for their corporate sponsors. Let us ask: "Who will benefit when the U.S. population doubles due primarily to immigration?" That's going to happen in this century at current immigration rates. The president and his Senate allies are working feverishly to resurrect the bill. But SB 1348 is a disaster - a treacherous, treasonous sellout of America and especially American workers. Brought to you by the leaders you elected. JERRY RITTER rit·ter n. pl. ritter A knight. [German, from Middle High German riter, from Middle Dutch ridder, from r Springfield Hospital ignoring bridge issue The plans put forward by McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center to mitigate traffic problems at the intersection of Delta Highway and Belt Line Road are at best cosmetic placebos, like wallpaper covering a large crack - expensive, maybe even pretty, but doing nothing to correct the underlying problem. The real problem at Delta and Belt Line is not Delta and Belt Line, but the width of Belt Line across the Willamette River, especially the westbound lanes. Unless and until the bridge is widened to a minimum of three lanes, any fixes will have a minimum impact on traffic. JOAN K.
