A lesson in real-world irony

My 7-year-old daughter, Taylor, asked me the other day to define "irony" for her. I was able to relate the following true story to her.

Six weeks ago, someone drove by my house in the middle of the night and fired five 9mm slugs into my older daughter's car. We have no idea why.

We do know that the case has not even been turned over to a detective for investigation. I wrote this off to the Eugene Police Department being too busy for something so mundane.

Then, on the night of St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:
  • Saint Patrick's Day, named after the saint
  • St. Patrick's Purgatory, an ancient pilgrimage in Lough Derg, County Donegal, Ireland
Day, my wife and I were walking downtown with another couple. As we crossed Sixth Avenue, headed north on Willamette Street, sirens and lights came on. Two police cars pulled in behind us and my wife and her friend were each issued $90 tickets for jaywalking jay·walk
intr.v. jay·walked, jay·walk·ing, jay·walks
To cross a street illegally or in a reckless manner.

[From jay2, inexperienced person.
.

As a result, I was able to give Taylor two examples of irony. The first was due to the fact that my wife's accomplice had her car broken into the night before and had her briefcase stolen. The second irony, or course, was that Eugene police apparently have time to issue trivial jaywalking citations (next lesson for Taylor: redundancy, with "trivial jaywalking citation" as an example) to law abiding citizens but do not have the resources to investigate a drive-by shooting drive-by shooting Public health A phenomenon in which one or more persons–commonly members of street gangs, open fire à la Al Capone from moving vehicles, often in retaliation for an alleged wrong-doing by a rival gang  in a residential neighborhood.

I think Taylor understands irony now.

Prosecute military sex offenders

Kudos to The Register-Guard, reporter Susan Palmer, "Doonesbury" and Suzanne Swift Suzanne Swift (July 15 1984 - ) is a Specialist in the United States Army. She is most noted for going AWOL from the Army when she received new orders to deploy to Iraq, after her charges of sexual assault from her first deployment had continued to go unanswered.  (Register-Guard, March 28)!

I believe it is in the public's interest to be educated about the prevalence of military sexual crimes and what goes on behind the closed doors of the military. Reading the article, I was struck by the mention of a 2005 military "confidential" option made available to military personnel who have been sexually assaulted.

A sexual assault survivor can now get help without forcing a military criminal investigation of the crime. In the midst Adv. 1. in the midst - the middle or central part or point; "in the midst of the forest"; "could he walk out in the midst of his piece?"
midmost
of trauma, this option does much to relieve the survivor who needs the support and time to heal.

Investigations and trials cause further damage to victims already physically and emotionally abused. Having to repeat and relive their trauma causes additional trauma.

But what becomes of military sexual predators? Free to strike again?

I think it is time that military takes on the responsibility of finding and prosecuting the sexual predators who live among them. Take this burden from survivors and make it a military investigation of its own. If the survivor had died as a result of the sexual attack, would not any court proceed with investigation without the deceased's testimony?

After removing a survivor to a safe place, couldn't the military proceed with a full investigation? There must be a way to provide safety for the survivor and consequence for the criminal. Incarcerate in·car·cer·ate

2. To shut in; confine.

Green has done exemplary job

Matt Cooper's article (Register-Guard, April 3) concerning the effort to recall Lane County Commissioner Bobby Green prompts my response.

Green has done an outstanding job as a Lane County commissioner for the past 12 years. Even if it could be proved that he used poor judgment on the county income tax proposal, he does not deserve to be crucified for it. This man has been loyal and courageous and served his people well.

Ben Pooler is on a grandiose mission that has taken him into the spotlight. I think he likes it. Seriously, why can't the electorate give up a bottle of wine once or twice a year, or feed the kitty Feed the Kitty is a Merrie Melodies cartoon directed by Chuck Jones and written by Michael Maltese where Bulldog Marc Antony adopts small cat Pussyfoot and tries to hide it from his mistress. It was released theatrically on February 2, 1952.  cat or doggie less expensive food, or buy less expensive makeup, or cut back on fast food and cook at home the old-fashioned way?

People will rue the day when payday comes around: Rampant crime, personal losses so dear that you weep, children lost to drugs and alcohol and crime, encroaching fear because there aren't enough police to cover your house and your workplace and where you play. And it will come soon, because many are so greedy and so shortsighted short·sight·ed

Hospital rezoning betrays trust

In the detailed reporting of the effect that the placement of McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center would have on the traffic at the intersection of Belt Line and Green Acres roads, I am astonished a·ston·ish
tr.v. as·ton·ished, as·ton·ish·ing, as·ton·ish·es
To fill with sudden wonder or amazement. See Synonyms at surprise.
that little has been said about the impact the traffic - both during and after construction - would have on county-controlled North Delta Highway The Delta Highway is a short limited-access freeway in Eugene, Oregon, United States, linking downtown Eugene with the Beltline Highway, northern Eugene and the Riverridge golf course to the north. .

A count of the current traffic reveals that 4,686 vehicles travel this route daily.

There are at least 15 entrances and exits leading onto the highway from Green Acres Road to the Ayres Road intersection. The proposed installation of a traffic light at Ayres and North Delta would only compound the traffic snarl. There are no passing lanes possible on North Delta.

It is disturbing to note that The Register-Guard has chosen to empha- size the Oregon Department of Transportation's approval of Triad's traffic proposals when, in truth, the reservations noted and the conditions yet to be met are of crucial importance to the acceptance of Triad's seriously flawed suggestions.

Finally, the proposal to change the zoning of the North Delta neighborhood is a betrayal of promises made in good faith by City Council's current planning documents.

Triad's eagerness to sell itself to other companies should tell us something of the fiscal prognostications and the futility of the ill-conceived pro- posed location of the hospital.

Let's hope the Eugene City Council can help McKenzie-Willamette find a better location!

Some in Eugene feel superior

Having been born in Eugene and grown up and raised my children in Springfield, I have some perspective about the comments made in the front page article about living in Springfield (Register-Guard, March 29).

In my 60 years of living in this metropolitan area, I have read and observed the dialogue about Eugene vs. Springfield, as it seems to be a constant theme. My perception is that the feeling of cultural or economic superiority is still held by many in Eugene.

Having had the opportunity to travel and interact with others throughout the world, I find it interesting that many in Eugene think of themselves as being so urbane and intellectually savvy when we all know each metro area This article is about the music production team.  is dealing with its own problems and issues and that talent and diversity are not exclusive.

Springfield has a wealth of talented business and professional leaders.

The Springfield School District is one of the best in Oregon, and the governance of city agencies has provided an economic and social base that has resulted in an infusion of business and culture.

New developments can be seen in RiverBend, River Glen There are at least five rivers called Glen:
  • River Glen, Lincolnshire, England
  • River Glen, Northumberland, England
  • Glen Water, Ayrshire, Scotland
  • Glen River, Quebec, Canada
  • Glen River, County Cork, Ireland
  • Glen River, County Donegal, Ireland
, and MountainView Estates. Also, please observe the prosperity of the Gateway area.

I now live in Eugene and enjoy all it has to offer. Each community has its highlights and each has its area of opportunity.

Let's quit being so provincial in our attitudes and typecasting The word typecasting (past participle typecast) can mean more than one thing:
  • type conversion in computer programming
  • type conversion in aviation
  • typecasting (acting) in acting
  • Typecast, a Filipino band
  • Typecast (horse), American Champion racehorse
and learn to prosper together in this extended metropolitan area.

Noses are rising to new heights

Regarding the article "High-end homes scale new heights" (Register-Guard, March 29): It sounds to me as if another thing is rising to new heights, and that is noses up in the air.

I mean, come on. "When people ask me where we live, we say MountainGate." Don't want to sully yourself by admitting you live with the hoi polloi in Springfield, huh?

Let me tell you something: After living in Eugene most of my life, I was very pleasantly surprised by my new home in Springfield. My neighbors actually make eye contact with me, smile and wish me a good morning. If I need help, my neighbors notice and offer their assistance.

This is a far cry from living in parts of Eugene, where my neighbors never looked at or spoke to me, or went as far as to lock their car doors when I walked by. This kind of arrogant and snobbish snob·bish

attitude is rampant in Eugene, and the article reminded me of why I left.

Now my property taxes are lower, there is more parking at the shops and my neighbors are friendlier.

They may not live in million-dollar homes, but I wouldn't trade them for $2 million.

Media despise President Bush

Imagine that you are on your deathbed and learn that the individual who was going to be writing your history and obituary was someone who despised you and was willing to lie in order to convince everyone that you were a dishonest and criminal individual and didn't care if it hurt your family, all decent folks.

That, my friends, is situation faced by President Bush with his coverage by the completely corrupt and transparently partisan mainstream media. This gaggle of mental midgets has a hatred for this decent and honorable man that falls outside the realm of reason.
