Get first aid, CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Definition

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure to support and maintain breathing and circulation for a person who has stopped breathing (respiratory arrest) and/or whose heart has stopped (cardiac

Our community is blessed with a number of heroes - people who put the interest of others ahead of their own.

One of those heroes is Dave Ziegler, the tireless executive director of the SCAR/Jasper Mountain residential treatment center A residential treatment center, often referred to by the acronym RTC, is a live-in therapy/behavior modification facility for adolescents who suffer from a variety of emotional conditions, ranging from drug abuse to violence to sexual behavioral problems.  for severely abused and emotionally disturbed children. Now in its 25th year, Ziegler has put the needs of the program and the children ahead of his own. As a result, the lives of these children, many now adults, are greatly improved.

Ziegler recently aided an adult member of our community. Driving down Harlow Road, he saw a man collapse on the sidewalk. Ziegler pulled over and went to the man's side. While others also gathered, Ziegler was the one who knew what to do and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. As a result, this man's life was saved.

Ziegler has always been an inspiration to me. The path he walks, however, is difficult to follow. His heroic act is a little easier. It has inspired me to update my first aid and CPR training.

You can be a hero, too. Call the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  at 344-5244 today to register for first aid and CPR training. You may not save a total stranger, like Dave Ziegler did. Instead, you could save the life of someone you love.

Personal freedoms come first

Nolan Nelson's Sept. 16 letter is an excellent example of not reading or understanding our nation's revolt from Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. The country is often referred to simply as Britain.  and the revolutions that were brewing and exploding throughout Europe. We formed a confederation of states before we adopted our federal Constitution with its amendments.

The Constitution set forth the structure of government and the amendments make clear what the government must not do. Our personal freedoms are first, and government is always secondary to that concept.

The 10th Amendment clearly states that those powers not otherwise granted are reserved to the states and the people. Nelson should read the histories of the Revolutionary War and the behavior of Great Britain's officials to those living in the 13 colonies. I believe he would not write the same thoughts again about what defenses our federal government should use in time of conflict.

We have not declared war under the Constitution; we have passed a resolution on which our leaders seem to place the same value. It is not a declaration of war, as Congress has not invoked that power.

Follow Brazil's example on fuels

My family and I this summer had a wonderful experience participating in a conducted tour of a sugar cane refinery plant in Brazil. It was enlightening to see the efficiency of the plant where vast volumes of ethanol are produced for fuel along with the traditional products of sugar, molasses molasses, sugar byproduct, the brownish liquid residue left after heat crystallization of sucrose (commercial sugar) in the process of refining. Molasses contains chiefly the uncrystallizable sugars as well as some remnant sucrose.  and spirits. The stalks, previously waste, are now used to generate electricity, and other byproducts are used to fertilize the soil. Nothing is wasted. In addition, their research, sponsored by the government, has produced varieties of cane that are resistant to pesticides and pests and even drought.

Most of our travel there involved vehicles fueled by ethanol. It was significant for us to see each gas station offering both ethanol and regular gas, with ethanol being substantially cheaper. Brazil is a great exemplar of maximizing alternative sources of energy.

By contrast, the Bush administration and its followers have opted to maintain our dependence on oil. To this end they manipulated reasons to invade Iraq and plunged us into a devastating dev·as·tate

Make self-serve legal in Oregon

I recently moved to Oregon, and I am enjoying it immensely, with the exception of mandated full-serve gas stations. I have never before wasted 15 minutes in line at a gas station while a poor attendant runs back and forth like a madman and 20 cars sit idling with their engines on, wasting precious petrol and polluting the precious environment.

This law baffles me, and the research I have done leaves me more baffled still. Can voters or officials really think that a few thousand gas-station jobs somehow compensates for millions of lost hours waiting at the pump every year? Or that mysterious safety or environmental concerns about self-serve outweigh the effects of millions of extra hours of cars idling wastefully each year?

With legal self-serve, perhaps proposed as a future ballot initiative, the economic effects of workers showing up earlier because they were not stuck in line at the pump could create more than enough jobs to make up for the loss of those gas-station attendant jobs.

Three for Dunes City

In the upcoming Dunes City Council election, I will vote for the three candidates who will bring the integrity, honesty, experience and maturity needed to heal the city's divisiveness - Bob Read, Dick Anderson

Torture can never be legal

Does anyone really believe that if the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld team had enough hard evidence to convict and execute the supposed terrorists they've spent years torturing that they wouldn't tell the American people An American people may be:
  • any nation or ethnic group of the Americas
  • see Demographics of North America
  • see Demographics of South America
 every detail?

What's really going on is they want secret trials, convictions and perhaps death sentences, and then President Bush will tell the American people how he saved us from these awful men. This is all in service to the gigantic deception of Iraq that continues to drain our resources, take the lives of our young men and women and kill innocent Iraqi citizens. We're not that stupid - or are we?

Torture can never be legal. How far over the line between morality and immorality do we have to go before someone calls a halt to the travesties Travesties is a comedic play by Tom Stoppard, first produced at the Aldwych Theatre, London, on June 10, 1974, in a production by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The play was directed by Peter Wood and designed by Carl Toms, with lighting by Robert Ornbo.  that have occurred since we invaded Iraq?

Time for change in 4th

It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  for a change in the 4th Congressional District Noun 1. congressional district - a territorial division of a state; entitled to elect one member to the United States House of Representatives

. Jim Feldkamp Jim Feldkamp is an American conservative politician. A Republican, he was a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Oregon's 4th congressional district in 2004 and 2006. Both times, Feldkamp was defeated by long-term incumbent Peter DeFazio.  is the vehicle for change in Oregon to replace the current representative, who has been in office long enough. Feldkamp has a rural business background that his opponent lacks.

Consider this: DeFazio worked at the left knee of Congressman Jim Weaver Jim Weaver is the name of:
  • Jim Weaver (ACC Commissioner)
  • Jim Weaver (basketball), coach of the Carolina Cougars of the ABA
  • Jim Weaver, current athletic director at Virginia Tech http://www.hokiesports.com/staff/weaver.
, who was about as far left of center as you can get. Once upon a time I voted for both Weaver and DeFazio, but I have since then understood the truth about DeFazio.

DeFazio drives an older model car around his Oregon constituents; meanwhile, he's driving a Mercedes in Washington, D.C. What's up with that? Chameleon chameleon (kəmē`lēən, –mēl`yən), small- to medium-sized lizard of the family Chamaeleonidae. About eighty species are found in sub-Saharan Africa, with a few in S Asia. ?

Oregon business people have traveled 3,000 miles to Washington, D.C., just to ask for help from DeFazio only to be blown off not only in front of other constituents, but in front of the media, too. His arrogance and indifference to Oregon businesses puts him way out in left field.

It's time for a change in the 4th district. We need someone who understands rural concerns, as well as urban concerns. We need someone who understands what it takes to create quality jobs, as well as tax revenues in Oregon.

That candidate is Jim Feldkamp - the one who doesn't have two different faces on two different coasts.

Iraq is no World War II

Evidently Gienie Assink (letters, Sept. 25) hasn't heard the news. Iraq had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attack on "our own soil." Iraq is no World War II.
