Eugene's bike riders are caring

I recently moved to Eugene and at first sight believed this city to be above average, not only in terms of how the city encourages an active lifestyle, but also in the beauty of the city and how child-friendly it is. I've never experienced a city that sponsors free supervised and organized park events for children.

I would like to offer special appreciation, though, to the bike riders here. While recently riding my bike in one of Eugene's many beautiful parks, I fell flat on my face. My first reaction was embarrassment, until I saw my knee bone. Then shock set in.

Ron and Connie stayed with me and shared their first-aid kit Noun 1. first-aid kit - kit consisting of a set of bandages and medicines for giving first aid

Kevin talked me out of shock and helped me across the Ferry Street Ferry Street (Chinese: 渡船街) is a street between Ferry Point and Mong Kok Tsui in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The street was on the shore of old reclamation before the new West Kowloon reclamation in 1990s.  Bridge. Can roads handle more traffic?

We have lived in about 19 different places since our marriage. The article "Developments irk homeowners" (Register-Guard, Aug. 26) sounds all too familiar.

While developers are high on our list of most disliked people, there are some who should be praised for developing tasteful areas. I would rather be next door to a beautifully done duplex than a single-family house badly in need of repairs and with a recreational vehicle or boat on its property.

We were also amused to note that the article made no mention of the higher volume of traffic such developments bring. Across the street from us, a 14-house development is being built. Three streets down, a 49-unit condominium is being built. Add 14 and 49, and you get 63 housing units. Multiply 63 by two cars each, and what does this give us? One hundred twenty-six cars.

Will Oakway Road be able to accommodate 126 more cars? Sometimes, I am unable to find parking at the Oakway Mall.

Republicans play the fear card

White House insiders have a joke among themselves. Karl Rove The external links in this article or section may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.  has laughingly told them not to worry about the Republican elections, because all they need to do is play the "fear" card.

On television, the talking heads

mention terrorists, and we freeze in our tracks. It works. Rove used it in 2002 and 2004, and for every presidential appointment that arises, for every spending bill, and now for the upcoming midterm elections.

Currently, the Republicans are exploiting the almost-terrorist-attacks that someone keeps foiling, and they assure us that terrorists will come to murder us if we withdraw from Iraq. Don't fall for this, friends.

Those in power will do anything necessary to stay there - lie, and they have lied; bury us in war; and make the world hate us. The Republicans are squandering squan·der

They go on vacation instead.

We must rid ourselves of this Congress. Show Rove, Vice President Dick Cheney, President Bush, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condi Rice that their fear-mongering won't work again, because we don't believe anything they say.

Let's vote out this corporation- and lobbyist-loving group, while there is still anything left to salvage.

Pluto will stay in Eugene model

Well, of course, Pluto will stay where it is in my Eugene Scale Model Solar System solar system, the sun and the surrounding planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that are bound by its gravity. The sun is by far the most massive part of the solar system, containing almost 99.9% of the system's total mass. . It's still there in the real solar system. The more the merrier, I say.

I'd like to display every object in the solar system and beyond. All the moons. All the asteroids This is a list of numbered minor planets, nearly all of them asteroids, in sequential order.

As of late September 2007 there are 164,612 numbered minor planets, and many more not yet numbered. Most asteroids are ordinary and not particularly noteworthy.
. Alpha Centari, our nearest star neighbor (if placed on the opposite side of the Earth it would only be half as far away as it would need to be to be accurately placed - darn).

Pluto's just a large rock way out there, and couldn't care less what we mortals call it. It is what it is. I've never thought Pluto should be considered a planet. It's not even round. It formed differently from the mainstream planets. Its orbit is too inclined, and too oval. It just never seemed worthy of planethood to me.

Don't get me wrong, Pluto is great. Has a moon half its size. But then, if Pluto's tumbling through space with an object that's half its size, should Charon (its moon) be considered a moon, or a co-equal planetoid planetoid: see asteroid. ? Another naming controversy! Cool. I lean toward them being equals.

Saxton should outline his plan

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron Saxton has started off the new school year by using one of the worst teaching techniques in one of his television ads - asking a question and giving a limited time for a response.

Instead of setting a poor example, why not use this opportunity to present a plan for funding Oregon's schools and colleges? In partial answer to Saxton's question - Gov. Ted Kulongoski has fought to maintain school funding in spite of the Republican control in the Oregon House of Representatives The Oregon House of Representatives is the lower house of the Oregon Legislative Assembly. There are 60 members of the House, representing 60 districts across the state, each with a population of 57,000. The House meets at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. . It is my understanding that as governor, and a former Marine, Kulongoski has honored our fallen soldiers by attending funeral services for all Oregon soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq (an unnecessary war, started and continued by the Republican administration in Washington).

There is a quiet little clinic in Eugene that truly makes a difference in the lives of the people it serves.

In June 2005, I was a mess. I was in chronic pain, unemployed and depressed to the point of contemplating suicide. I heard about the Volunteers in Medicine clinic and qualified for help.

For the past year, under the care of Dr. Lois Garner and the wonderful staff and volunteers, I have received the best heath care I have ever experienced. Not only have they helped me overcome the chronic pain in my feet and back, they have helped me control high blood pressure, reduce my cholesterol level and treated me for depression. Dr. Garner and the staff also nursed me through a bout of pneumonia.

I applied for vocational rehabilitation and qualified. After a year of care from VIM, I am getting back on my feet and working. With some regret, I am no longer eligible for care at VIM; however, I soon will be insured at work. The kindness, concern and compassion shown to me makes me feel that Volunteers in Medicine is the finest health care clinic in Lane County. It is truly a little clinic with a huge heart.

My hope is that our community can support the organizations that sincerely care about the welfare of every human being. It's people like these, who have unconditional compassion and no expectation of compensation, who truly make this a great community.

Not only is this an outrageous example of "sizism" (do we call little people "dwarves dwarves

Bring the troops home now

I want our elected officials to do everything in their power to stop the war in Iraq. I want them to bring the troops home now. I do not want a war in Iran, North Korea, or anywhere else.

I demand that they do everything they can to fully fund veterans' health care and benefits. To do anything less than this is cowardice. I will not vote for any candidate who does not support the troops by bringing them home Bringing Them Home is the title of the Australian "Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families".  and ending the war.
