Byline: The Register-Guard

Rethink Douglas County Douglas County is the name of twelve counties in the United States:
  • Douglas County, Colorado (Located in the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area)
  • Douglas County, Georgia (Located in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area)
  • Douglas County, Illinois
  • Douglas County, Kansas

Thanks to Diane Dietz of The Register-Guard we have a series of very informative articles regarding the problems associated with abandoned mines in both southern Lane County and Douglas County.

In reading about the amount of toxic chemicals that are being leached into tributaries of the Coast Fork of the Willamette River Willamette River

and Umpqua River The Umpqua River (UHMP-kwah) is a river on the Pacific coast of Oregon in the United States, approximately 111 mi (179 km) long. One of the prinicipal rivers of the Oregon coast, it drains an expansive network of valleys in the mountains west of the Cascade Range and south of the , it is mind boggling that Douglas County Commissioners Dan Van Slyke and Marilyn Kittleman continue to push for construction of a dam that would bring more mercury and arsenic into Elk Creek Elk Creek may refer to the following:

With the government agencies trying to avoid responsibility for clean-up costs, it amazes me that Douglas County would even entertain the idea of creating another water impoundment An action taken by the president in which he or she proposes not to spend all or part of a sum of money appropriated by Congress.

The current rules and procedures for impoundment were created by the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (2 U.S.C.A.

The Department of Environmental Quality has made disastrous mistakes as outlined in the articles, and has downplayed the level of danger. When the commissioners say that mercury is no problem, "We'll just put up signs warning against eating fish," I cannot accept their authority on what is safe for the river system, fish, or for myself.

On June 22, I was having a wonderful late-morning hike at Spencer Butte Spencer Butte is a prominent landmark in Lane County, Oregon, United States, south of Eugene. Every time she moved I could see the soil tearing away from the rock. I couldn't get to the dog, and I could see that if the soil gave way, she was going to fall quite a ways down the ridge.

Thanks to the offer of help from a mom and her son who were out for a hike, our dog is safe and sound. Ryan and his mom, Karen, scrambled up the trail when they heard about our situation.

Ryan, on leave from the military, arrived first. At a glance he took in the situation and said, "We'll get your dog off that ledge, no problem." The next thing I knew he was climbing down to the dog. Fire Chief Darling gave his all

I want to honor a much-respected friend and firefighter, Lane Rural Fire/Rescue District former Chief Chip Darling, who gracefully departed this life June 13 after a long battle with prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. .

Darling gave nearly half his life to Lane Rural Fire/Rescue: 10 years as a volunteer firefighter before 15 years as full-time chief. He was a consummate professional leader, achieving the highest possible standards of quality in emergency medical and fire services. His greatest accomplishment was introducing a vital advanced life support ambulance service to Lane County.

The last several years, from my seat on Lane Rural Fire/Rescue's board of directors, I watched Darling lead the department through the challenges of growth and change. Despite the agony of having cancer, with its concomitant miseries of arduous tests and therapies and treatments, he never gave less than his all.

One of Darling's most enduring legacies is that he attracted and inspired other people to share his passion for excellence and great dedication to service. He truly loved the fire service and he gave himself to it completely, until he could give no more. He loved and believed in the members of the Lane Rural Fire/Rescue family, and his vision lives on in their continuing commitment to excellence in service to community.

Darling surrendered nothing as he approached his last days - not his tremendous courage, nor his immense passion for public service nor, least of all, his dignity.

Thank you, Chip. It was a privilege and honor to know you.

Headline exaggerated ruling

I hope those who read The Register-Guard take it with a grain of salt.

The headline concerning the Supreme Court's ruling on military trials at Guantanamo is stretching the truth - if not a flat-out lie (Register-Guard, June 30). All the justices are doing is asking the Bush administration to get congressional approval before beginning military-style trials.

This is necessary as Congress does not have what it takes to declare war and protect the American people. I also believe that Justice Anthony Kennedy is taking this opportunity to slam the president for not backing him for chief justice.

I find it laughable that The Register-Guard, instead of stating its own view of the situation, bays like a sheep in a flock led by the treasonous New York New York, state, United States

KWAX gets no federal funding

We appreciate and agree with recent letters to the editor praising public broadcasting and urging citizens to lobby Congress against further funding cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is a private non-profit corporation which is chartered and funded by the United States Federal Government to promote public broadcasting.

What's being dumped in river?

Enjoy the Willamette River? I don't think so. Not until we find out what is being dumped in it almost every day, who is responsible and put a stop to it.

On June 3, Gov. Ted Kulongoski took a canoe trip down the Willamette to dedicate a portion of it and to encourage people to enjoy the recreational opportunities that the river has to offer. Apparently, it was clean that day. But someone has been dumping something into the river and no one seems to care enough about it to find out who or what.

My husband and other people have called and talked to the Department of Environmental Quality, but it doesn't seem to care enough to find out anything. The DEQ's response was, "you find out where it's coming from and let us know." Of course, that is almost impossible since by the time you get a boat in the river, it has started clearing up. How can we enjoy the water if we are not sure what has been dumped in it that morning? Someone who has the power to do something needs to quit turning the other way. Let's keep our river clean so that all of us down stream can enjoy it.

Display American flag properly

The retreat ceremony is known to have been in use in the United States Army United States Army

The military retreat ceremony serves a twofold purpose: It signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect for the flag.

It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. Why give away toxic fish?

Jack King's picture in The Register-Guard on June 27 showed him cleaning fish that he caught in the mercury-laden waters at Cottage Grove Lake. The article said "Fishing buddies Jack King, 85, and Glen LaVine, 75, catch their limit, clean their haul but give it all away. Nary nar·y

a bite has passed their lips since the mercury warnings appeared."

I can't imagine anyone knowing that these fish are poison and then giving them away for other people to eat. Last I heard intentionally poisoning someone was a crime. I sure am glad that King and LaVine aren't friends of mine.

Iraq war was a bad decision

The Republicans want to label any plan to get out of Iraq as "cut and run" in an attempt put Democrats in a bad light.

We made a bad decision to go and start a war with Iraq and now it's time to leave and try to repair the damage. The first step of doing that is to take our military out of Iraq.
