Byline: The Register-Guard

Change policy on birth notice

For 16 years, The Years, The

the seven decades of Eleanor Pargiter’s life. [Br. Lit.: Benét, 1109]

See : Time
Register-Guard was a welcome presence on my doorstep each morning. I started each day with a glance at the weather and a glimpse of the broader world and I grew as attached to my ritual read as I was to my morning caffeine. But now, The Register-Guard, has really let me down, and for the sake of ethics, I am forced to quit the newspaper cold turkey.

I should have canceled my subscription two years ago when the newspaper wouldn't run my wedding announcement. That was bad enough. But refusing to announce the births of babies born to lesbian families? That's just mean-spirited. Who crowned the newspaper the proclaimer of legitimate family units? What possible harm could be done by acknowledging that babies can have two mommies?

When my partner and I started our family 23 years ago, we didn't even consider an announcement in our local paper. But times have changed (or so I thought). Eugene is an open-minded, inclusive town, and it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  The Register-Guard's editorial policies reflected that.

I'll start my subscription back up the minute the newspaper changes its policy regarding birth announcements. And when it does, it had better let KLCC KLCC Kuala Lumpur City Centre (Malaysia)  know, because until that day, that's where I'm getting my news.

President should share blame

In regard to the massacre of civilians at Haditha, President Bush says, "Those involved will be punished." Does this include those who put the Marines in Iraq? Some of the rage should be directed at President Bush himself.

Tallon backed response teams

There needs to be an added note about Fire Chief Tom Tallon as he is about to retire (Register-Guard, May 31).

He was and has been instrumental in the formation of the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTS) in Eugene since 2004. Having had 10 years experience with CERTS as chief in Salt Lake City, he already knew their value in helping neighborhoods when catastrophes happen and first responders are either overwhelmed or cannot get to the scene in time.

He personally greeted nearly every citizen-student - now over 130 volunteers - at the beginning of their four-week, 25-hour training course, and he graduated nearly every student with a hearty handshake, CERT pin and diploma. Typically, he would spend extra time, often showing gratitude for their time and effort. And, he had the uncanny ability to remember much about each individual weeks later. He gave the program the official boost and authenticity it deserves.

Much appreciated. He will be missed.

Liberal orthodoxy pervasive

If there is a unifying thread in the letters of response to Alexander Kleshchev's guest viewpoint (Register-Guard, May 19) noting the lack of conservative representation on the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. Eric Stillwell decries "conservative orthodoxy" (letters, May 25) while Lawrence Ryan celebrates "free thought and free inquiry" (letters, May 29). What isn't apparent to them is the tiresome predictability of what can only be called "orthodox liberal thought" reflected in their words and those of UO faculty who occasionally publish in The Register-Guard.

Kleshchev's article was a welcome change of pace. Indeed, by UO standards, it was unorthodox and revealed a refreshing degree of free thought and inquiry.

The tragic part of the diversity issue is that it is valued for promoting racial, cultural, and gender diversity while ignoring the fact that the university's first obligation and mandate is an academic one. Whatever noble goals may be achieved by socially-engineered diversity, unless there is a commitment to academic diversity, the UO is little more than a finishing school fin·ish·ing school

Unfortunately, the end result is that rather than learning what conservatives believe and engaging in lively, civil debate that enriches everyone, students receive their knowledge of the entire breadth of conservative thought second-hand. How sad that the insecurity and fear of traditional thought and belief runs so deep.

Just the same, "Go Ducks!" Better yet, "Go Parrots!"

It has recently come to my attention that The Register-Guard does not print the obituaries of stillborn babies. As the mother of a son who was stillborn, this makes me extremely sad and angry.

I know it is difficult for others who have not experienced the loss of a child before birth to understand the importance of acknowledging our children whether they took one breath or none at all.

This past January, Oregon put into effect a bill that would allow families to receive a Certificate of Stillbirth Stillbirth Definition

A stillbirth is defined as the death of a fetus at any time after the twentieth week of pregnancy. Stillbirth is also referred to as intrauterine fetal death (IUFD).
for their babies. It would only make sense that The Register-Guard follow the state's lead in acknowledging our children by allowing families to place an obituary in their memory. I am sorry if this will make a few readers uncomfortable, but stillbirth is a reality that hundreds of families face each year in this state alone.

Rude riders hurt all bicyclists

While it is admirable to show concern for our planet and personal health by riding with Critical Mass, not following the basic rules of the road while riding a bike not only endangers the Critical Mass riders but it also endangers those of us who bicycle several thousand miles a year by fostering ill will among the motorists who are impacted by this event.

Too many Critical Mass riders ride without respecting the rights of others on the road; one cannot demand respect without giving it. Blowing through stop signs or even rolling through an intersection as the light turns red are ticketable offenses whether you are in a car or on a bike, and to be cited for such a thing does not constitute harassment Ask a Lawyer

One of the oldest stories of political wisdom was that of Joseph. Swap buildings with the feds

Why all this talk about a new City Hall?

With the feds vacating one palace for a bigger one, why doesn't the Eugene City Council decide to take over the old federal building for the next City Hall? This would allow the cops to completely take over the old City Hall. Millions could be saved to build even bigger parking garages!

No need to offend on purpose

Regarding the widely discussed March cartoons in The Insurgent INSURGENT. One who is concerned in an insurrection. He differs from a rebel in this, that rebel is always understood in a bad sense, or one who unjustly opposes the constituted authorities; insurgent may be one who justly opposes the tyranny of constituted authorities.  - we need never do a right thing in a wrong way.

If it is right to protect the freedom of the press, it is wrong to offend others on purpose to do it.

If it is right for a president to protect our country, it is wrong for him to torture people to do so. By this we understand that you are only doing rightly if what you are doing is itself right.

We have our freedom just as much when we restrain ourselves as when we offend. Teenagers who choose to dress the same as their parents and differently from their peers are just as independent as teenagers who dress oppositely.

Many times, we're not sure if we are truly enjoying our freedom or just kowtowing to the dictates of others - unless we break the bounds of whatever is expected of us, not realizing that having rebellion as our only way of confirming our freedom is bondage BONDAGE. Slavery.  in itself. While one can trample on others to prove one's freedom, one could as easily be kind and be just as free, if not more so.

Almost all of us are slaves to some kinds of wrong. The one who is truly free is able to be kind at all times, under no compulsion. May this freedom ring from The Insurgent in days ahead. May they commit random acts of kindness toward followers followers
