LETTERS IN THE EDITOR'S MAILBAG.Byline: The Register-Guard Jury duty rewarding experience Recently, I received a summons in the mail stating that I had been picked for federal jury duty. My initial thoughts were of how I might avoid this untimely task in light of my busy schedule. Of the 25 of us who showed up, eight were picked to make up the jury, and I happened to be one of the eight. Lucky me! We heard opening arguments both from the plaintiff and the defendant. We were advised to take notes and told not to discuss the case after the first day of trial. The following day was much of the same. We heard closing arguments and instructions from the judge, then came the deliberating. As we walked through the doors leading to the deliberating room it dawned on me: We held fate in the palm of our hands. Our decision this day would not change the course of history, but perhaps we would come away with a renewed comprehension of what it means to be a free people. At the end of the trial, I had come to appreciate the gravity of our service. Eight people from all walks of life were engaged in something collectively much bigger than themselves. True, we all missed work for a day or two, but as we left the courtroom, you could tell we were all exuding a sense of accomplishment that we felt good about. What did I learn, you might ask? Just that duty far outweighs the course of everyday life. ROBERT CARTER Robert Carter or Bob Carter are common names in the English language. They may refer to:

KER CLEARY Eugene Support effort to censure Bush If you recall, President Bush could have approved the wiretapping A form of eavesdropping involving physical connection to the communications channels to breach the confidentiality of communications. For example, many poorly-secured buildings have unprotected telephone wiring closets where intruders may connect unauthorized wires to listen in on phone of any suspected terrorist and then have used the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court to retroactively approve that wiretapping, as long as the court was notified within 72 hours of the incident. He is asking for censure for President Bush for breaking the law, even though Congress wants to change the laws so that his actions to spy on citizens without a warrant could be legalized. Can you believe this? What country are we living in? Did we fall asleep and wake up with a king ruling this country? Is President Bush above the law, or is he actually accountable for breaking the law and spying on citizens illegally? Contact Sens. Feldkamp and his supporters should not be taking lessons from the Bush-Rove spin machine unless Feldkamp wants to match Bush's 34 percent ratings in the polls. REGINALD S. TONRY Walterville Police kept peace march safe As citizens of Eugene who participated in the anti-war rally on March 18, we wanted to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the law enforcement officers who were patrolling and assisting in the march and demonstration. It was a smooth and peaceful demonstration, and the police were helpful in keeping marchers safe and organized. Historically, there has been friction between protesters and law enforcement. Hopefully, this rally shows the animosity has come to an end. GREG VAN VLACK EILEEN NITTLER Eugene Is Eugene worth fighting for? I still ask over and over again: Why is abortion an issue? Isn't the real issue, why don't people figure out what causes those unwanted pregnancies? We live in a day of so much technology and so many choices. There are more ways to prevent getting pregnant than I could ever list. With the exception of perhaps rape, why is abortion even an issue? If a woman had to resort to a coat hanger in a basement or closet, perhaps she'd be more mindful of what causes those pregnancies.
