Gerlach deserves fair trial

I attended South Eugene High School South Eugene High School is a public high school located in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It was founded as Eugene High School around 1900, and was located at Willamette Street and West 11th Avenue in a brick building that later served as Eugene's city hall.  with alleged Earth Liberation Front The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) is the collective name for anonymous and autonomous individuals or groups that, according to the now defunct Earth Liberation Front Press Office, use "economic sabotage and guerrilla warfare to stop the exploitation and destruction of the  vandalism participant Chelsea Gerlach. At an age when teenage radicalism was often the prevailing political spirit, Chelsea was a voice of reason and responsibility. Though passionate about her progressive political beliefs, she was always full of respect and eager to mediate MEDIATE, POWERS. Those incident to primary powers, given by a principal to his agent.  of all.

Everything that I have known of Chelsea since high school indicates a mature, caring woman, eager to help make the world a better place for everyone through peaceful, constructive means.

I hope that the hysteria surrounding these cases - as displayed both in the severity of the charges and in the words of government officials - will be kept out of the courtroom and that Chelsea and her co-defendants will receive a fair trial.

Change paradigm of objection

Perhaps in no other way are cultures more likely to clash than in their ideas of what is humorous or offensive. I am speaking, of course, of the angry Muslim reaction to some Danish cartoons.

Never before have I felt so threatened by Muslims, and the repercussions repercussions nplrépercussions fpl

of this threat will not be good - unless we have a golden opportunity of enlightenment here. If we carefully bridge the cultures, we could come closer to peace than we have been in many years.

What makes the Danish cartoons funny? Are they insults against Allah, as the Muslims have interpreted? I think not. Insulting God is just plain stupid and not funny at all. However, poking fun at what people believe is true of God is funny.

The idea that God/Allah would reward men for violent acts with virgins and is running out of virgins is funny. Or is it? Hmm, maybe not if you are a feminist.

Hey girls, here is an idea: What do you say we all get in the streets and strongly protest the offensive sexism of rewarding men with virgins? In our culture it is not OK to use virgins as rewards for men, and we need to raise awareness of this cultural difference. We need to trump the `I am offended' card with a bigger and louder card saying `sexism is offensive.' Change the paradigm of the objection to the cartoon to an objection to sexism.

DeFazio displayed courage

Guadalupe Quinn Peraza has been in The Register-Guard three times in the last couple weeks denouncing House Resolution 4437 and castigating Rep. Peter DeFazio Peter Anthony DeFazio (born May 27, 1947) is an American politician. He serves as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Oregon, representing the 4th Congressional District and is currently serving his 11th term.  for supporting it.

Peraza says, "Many Oregonians are profoundly disappointed with DeFazio's vote." Maybe so. But I'll wager that most Oregonians are profoundly grateful for DeFazio's courage in standing up to the open borders crowd.

This is in stark contrast to the spineless cave-ins of his Democratic Oregon colleagues. HR 4437 is the first serious congressional effort to enforce U.S. immigration laws immigration laws nplleyes fpl de inmigración

in decades. It came about because the vast majority of Americans are fed up with the invasion at our southern border. Until HR 4437 there had been no meaningful attempt at a remedy.

I am also grateful to the few Americans, such as the members of Oregonians for Immigration Reform Immigration reform is the common term used in political discussions regarding changes to immigration policy. In a certain sense, reform can be general enough to include promoted, expanded, or open immigration, but in reality discussions of reform often deal with the aspect of  (www.oregonir.org) with enough courage to publicly echo DeFazio's call - all while being labeled racists by many on the left.

Peraza has little to fear - for now. I expect the Senate, including Oregon's two senators, to be as spineless as DeFazio's Democratic colleagues. That chamber, with President Bush's support, will almost certainly defeat or gut HR 4437. And we will continue to watch America's population explode, our resources dwindle dwin·dle
