State of Union deteriorating

It is almost that time again. Be sure and send your hard-earned dollars to President Bush and his crew. He needs another $120 billion for his war.

The next time they roar up on my rear bumper, I'll be the car that immediately slows down to and continues at the exact posted speed limit, despite the fact that I'll no doubt be delaying their arrival at their oh-so-important destinations.

The accidents that these people all make inevitable by their mean-spirited "get-out-of-my way" driving behaviors will undoubtedly be less serious at the posted speeds. See you out on the road!

The extensive data gathered through the state's monitoring efforts was the primary factor that allowed the state to craft a scientifically defensible assessment. Letter reveals hatred at home

I am responding to the Feb. 8 letter titled "Soldiers die for nothing" written by Greg Hume of Creswell.

I know the family of this soldier and work with his brother. This citizen gave his life for something he and his family believed in. His family's grief is deeper than I am capable of understanding. While the cause may not be shared by everyone, a cruel depiction of this man's death serves only to prove how much hatred exists at home.

It is clear that we don't have to go to Iraq to find inhumanity in·hu·man·i·ty

Don't mess with Daybreak

My two favorite parts of the paper in the morning are City/Region and Daybreak. Then somebody goes and messes with the Daybreak.

I oughta write to the Mailbag and tell the editors what I think. Nah, nobody really cares. Well, lo and behold, Sharon Lamont (letters, Feb. 7) shares my view. So, I second the motion - quit messing with the Daybreak section. Leave it a section by itself, as it has been for quite some time. We like it that way.

Not quite a native yet

Today was sunny, so I mowed the back lawn. It was a little tough going but it worked - sort of. This prompted me to think about how my ideas of mowing the lawn have changed since I moved to Springfield a year ago from New Mexico.

There was a time when I cut the lawn when it was a nice day and the grass was dry. After we moved here, I was surprised to see people pushing the mower around in what I considered far from ideal conditions. Gradually I have learned how to do it here. By last fall my lawn criteria had been reduced to "No standing water in the lawn" or "Not actually raining at the time."

Since then my requirements have dropped still further to "Standing water in small puddles not covering the grass" or "Not raining very hard at the time."

I'm considering a slight reduction in my demands to "A few taller blades of grass showing through the standing water." "Not raining very hard when I'm filling the gas tank." "Leaving my rubber boots by the mower to remind me to put them on."

In the process of trying to adjust to this area I'm working hard on my pronunciation of "Willamette" and "Oregon." Give me another year and you'll think I'm a native.

Bush is not above law

As usual, the president is using misleading terms to describe outright unconstitutional events. Let's call it what it is, folks - this is a domestic spying program that invades the privacy of innocent Americans.

Myself, I don't have anything to hide if they tapped me, but it's the principle of the matter that is at issue here. What's next? Is Bush going to come into our homes and search and get the court order three days later, as he can now with this spying program?

Bush is not above the law, and he needs to be held accountable. Regardless of your party, listen to your conscience and speak out against this absolutely illegal program he has going on. Let's get Congress to listen to us.

Schools need kindergartens

One positive change that the Eugene School District Eugene School District (4J) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It serves the city of Eugene Elementary schools
  • Adams Elementary School
  • Alternative Kindergarten
  • Awbrey Park Elementary School
  • Bertha Holt Elementary School
could institute to alleviate tension between alternative and neighborhood schools is to ensure that all schools have kindergartens. The situation where a couple of alternative schools do not have kindergartens is bad for the neighborhood schools, bad for the alternative schools, bad for the parents and bad for the children involved.

Neighborhood school resent having alternative school parents `using' their school for kindergarten. Kindergarten is relatively expensive since the class sizes are typically smaller than at higher grades. It also means that the school will have slots that it needs to fill for its first grade classes when students leave for other schools.

I believe it would be better for the alternative schools also, since more families make their school choices at kindergarten rather than at first grade and this would allow them access to a larger pool of students.

It is hard on parents, especially those that have an older child at one of these schools. They have to choose a school for one year while feeling guilty about `using' another school's kindergarten, and then they have to endure a year with children at two different public schools.

It is also hard on the children because they make friends and get used to one school environment and then are uprooted to learn a new system and make new friends.

This would be one easy change that would be positive for everyone.

Hold president accountable

The president is not above the law. There are checks and balances in place to assure the American people that a president is only an elected official. Congress must hold him accountable.
