LETTERS IN THE EDITOR'S MAILBAG.Byline: The Register-Guard Military aids quake victims Bucklin Moon's Nov. 21 letter offered good suggestions about using U.S. military to provide relief to Pakistani earthquake victims. Actually, those efforts have been ongoing since a few days after the earthquake. The Nov. 11 "60 Minutes" program highlighted the laudable laud·a·ble adj. There is still no mention of the U.S. military efforts, which explains why Moon wasn't aware of those efforts. There is a lot of information available. There is a list of articles at www.defenselink.mil/home/features/2005/Pakistan/index_flash.html that shows the extent of the U.S. military relief activity in Pakistan. This effort includes more than 1,000 U.S. servicemen and women in Pakistan The status of women in Pakistan varies considerably across classes, regions, and the rural/urban divide due to uneven socioeconomic development and the impact of tribal, feudal, and capitalist social formations on women's lives. , aircraft and crews delivering supplies, 18 helicopters, three Navy ships, $100 million from Department of Defense funds, $100 million pledged by other U.S. government agencies and $46 million donated by the American private sector. In addition there were cargo planes and helicopters from the Russians, French sailors, Qatari medics, Afghan National Guard. It is amazing a·maze v. a·mazed, a·maz·ing, a·maz·es v.tr. 1. I hope that Moon will check the references I have provided and see the extent of the support that is being provided by the U.S. military to earthquake victims in Pakistan. We can be proud of our efforts. STEPHEN E. WATKINS Eugene Protect bike investment I am a volunteer in the property control unit of the Eugene Police Department. Property control receives and stores all criminal evidence and lost or stolen property until it can be returned to the rightful owner. We store an amazing amount of items, but the one that takes up the most room and is in the greatest number is bicycles. At any one time there can be as many as 50 to 75 bicycles in storage. These are bikes that were either stolen or lost and have been recovered by Eugene police officers. The vast majority of these bikes are eventually sent to auction because we cannot find the rightful owner. It doesn't need to be this way. If you own a bicycle, please take a few simple steps and you might get your wheels back. Turn your bike upside down and find the serial number. It will be stamped into the frame. Record this number along with the make, model name and color(s) of your bike. If your bike is stolen, call the police department and file a report. Your bicycle will be entered into a nationwide database, and if it is recovered by the police you will get it back. If you don't follow these steps, you probably will not get it back. Your bicycle can be a rather large investment. The Eugene police really want you to have it back, but we need your help. Write down the information about your bike, put it in a safe place and if it is ever stolen let us know about it. With a little luck, your bike could be returned to you. BARCLAY H. SCHAW Eugene Minnis offered proposals David Mandelblatt's Nov. 15 letter criticized the lack of interest by state legislators in solving the problems of education in Oregon. He points out that Rep. Debi Farr apparently was the only state representative present when Speaker of the House Karen Minnis Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village) is a Republican politician in Oregon, U.S.A. She has been a member of the Oregon House of Representatives since 1998, and served as Speaker of the House from 2003 to 2006. spoke to the City Club of Eugene. However, Mandelblatt wrote that he "... heard nothing (from Minnis) that sounded like solutions or proposals." Mandelblatt is mistaken. I was there when Minnis spoke, and she did indeed discuss education programs and funding at some length. She described her Stable Schools Plan, which she believes would ensure dedicated funding for public schools and would ensure that schools receive reasonable and sustainable increases within the taxes Oregonian already pay. Minnis' plan is supported by the Oregon School Boards Association, the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, the Portland Public School Board and lawmakers of both parties. Even Democrat Gov. Ted Kulongoski Theodore R. "Ted" Kulongoski (born November 5 1940, in rural Missouri[1]) is an American Democratic politician. Since 2003, he has served as the Governor of Oregon. He was re-elected in 2006. used the Minnis plan as a template for his own education funding proposal! Although the Minnis plan was passed by the House this summer, the Senate never gave it more than a cursory hearing. This is disgusting! Education needs bipartisan support in order to provide Oregon students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the modern technological world. The world of the future holds problems that only educated minds can solve. No other issue is more important. TONIE NATHAN Member, City Club Program Committee Eugene Darfur genocide continues I commend The Register-Guard for its serial editorials monitoring President Bush's reaction to the Sen. John McCain's policy on torture and aggressively urging the president to live up to his "we do not torture" assertion on this critically important issue. Just as it is now, as I write, 14 days since the president made his declaration on torture, it is 438 days since Colin Powell Noun 1. I urge The Register-Guard to take an editorial stance on the genocide in Darfur similar to the strong stance taken against torture - reporting regularly the number of days without meaningful U.S. action since Powell's genocide declaration on Sept. 9, 2004. Perhaps this daily editorial could be titled (hopefully), "We do not tolerate genocide." Eugene Beaver fans mugged My father and I came to the Civil War game dressed in orange and black, knowing it would be a hostile crowd. But this was in all good fun, right? It was just a football game, and it was his first trip to Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. . Numerous Duck fans came by to check on my dad and me. They all said, "Not all Duck fans have that little class." Yet as the game deteriorated into a rout, the surrounding Duck fans continued to hurl a constant barrage of insults and profanities at the two of us. My father, having had enough, asked if we could leave. I went to the game hoping to have a good time with my dad. Instead, I ended up with a concussion, and we both had the worst sporting experience of our lives. I would recommend that until Autzen Stadium significantly upgrades its security, no visiting team fan attend a game there. JOSH BALLOCH Salem Article missed point on 'WP' The Register-Guard's front page article on Nov. 21 about the use of white phosphorous phos·pho·rous adj. In their description of the battle for Falluja last November, they describe the use of WP as a "potent psychological weapon," "shake and bake missions" where WP is used to "flush them out" and HE (high explosives) are used to "take them out." This point was completely glossed over by your article. GORDON STURROCK, Founder VeteransAgainstTorture.com Eugene Beware zero-sum mindset mind·set or mind-set n. 1. We've been spared tsunamis and hurricanes, yet our hearts go out to our young men and women in Iraq and we all seek peace in a troubled world. Why is it then, that our politics are so contentious? We share the same goals: peace, prosperity and justice. Why does the political discourse sound like a shouting match shouting match n (col) → discusión f a voz en grito shouting match n (inf) → engueulade f, empoignade f ? The conflict arises from a zero-sum mindset. The notion that one's gain comes from another's loss. Or that I'm right, and you're wrong. If we could define solutions that benefit everyone, imagine the Thanksgiving we could celebrate. I've decided to do my part to narrow the chasm between the extremes. Why do you think the way you do about abortion? Gun control? Gay marriage? How do you justify imposing your views on others? Look up what the Constitution has to say on the subject. If you can't rationally explain your views, how can you justify shouting them at others? Join me in the dialogue. It doesn't matter what party you belong to, but give the issues some thoughtful consideration. Maybe next year we can be thankful for a more thoughtful sense of civic participation.
