We must atone for appeasement appeasement

Foreign policy of pacifying an aggrieved nation through negotiation in order to prevent war. The prime example is Britain's policy toward Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

How incredible to consider abandoning the war on terror This article is about U.S. actions, and those of other states, after September 11, 2001. For other conflicts, see Terrorism.

Police shooting decision unjust

Finally, I have realized that there is no longer any justice for citizens of this county.

The fatal shooting of the 15-year-old youth in Springfield bears this out. Any time we citizens and taxpayers just sit by and watch, our district attorney makes unjust decisions simply for the protection of an unfit police officer who made the decision to kill based only on what he thought may be a harmful situation for himself. We really need to come together and do something about it this time.

May God help us, and especially our children, if they should ever put a gun in the hands of this incompetent individual again. This man should never be allowed to wear a police uniform, especially when it bears the logo "To protect and serve."

Charities won't help with travel

I am on disability and was unable to help him much, so when we were informed that his father's body was going to be cremated this week, we called agencies to try to get gas money for my son to visit his father's body before cremation cremation, disposal of a corpse by fire. We did receive a donation for gas from a private citizen, whom we thank from the bottom of our hearts. My son hocked his bass guitar that he will need for his classes on his return. This gave him enough money to drive to Las Vegas in his old Ford Escort.

He, his wife and son made it with $15 left, no motel or food money, but happy because he can see his dad before cremation and bring his ashes home.

We haven't figured how to get them home yet, but we will without the help of these so-called charity agencies.

Bach Festival too expensive

So, music sponsors in Roseburg and Albany provide free concerts for everyone. In Eugene, they subsidize the Bach Festival so that people who can afford those pricey tickets don't have to pay the full cost. And the rest of us get nothing.

Another case of the haves hogging the resources at the expense of the have-nots. The beat goes on - but only for those who can afford it.

Soup kitchen should be closed

We are extremely disappointed about the Springfield Planning Commission's disregard for the Springfield Development Code at the July 6 hearing.

We commend Commissioner Gayle Decker for her common-sense approach. However, other commissioners appeared to let themselves be influenced by testimony of speakers in favor of the application who played on emotions and Christian scripture that in no way addressed the governing criteria upon which the commission was to base a decision. This reflects poorly on their ability to fulfill the requirements of their positions.

We ask: Does compassion toward the homeless require compromised peace and safety?

It is clear to us that the conditions presented by the planning commission serve to extend the use of Goreap Ministries at the American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  well into October. The right thing to do is for Goreap to take responsibility for the situation it has created by closing the soup kitchen to restore peace and safety in our neighborhood. It is not the neighborhood's obligation to tolerate more of the same drawn-out continuation of unlawful activity at the Legion while Goreap finds funding for relocation.

We hope that Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken's personal pledge to support Goreap will be directed toward helping this organization find a suitable and appropriate facility that will allow it to make its contribution to the area's well-being while not degrading the quality of life for the residents of this or any other established residential neighborhood.

Time for a one-week strike

In declaring independence from British hegemony, Thomas Jefferson wrote that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable UNALIENABLE. The state of a thing or right which cannot be sold.

Following Jefferson's dictum, all of us should demonstrate in the streets, protesting the theft of those ideals. We should loudly shout shame on the lying, cheating and draft-dodging team of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney who, through dissemblance dis·sem·ble

We must reclaim the principles that gird our nation. Since our servants in Congress lack the spine, we, the people, should protest with a work stoppage of one week. A united strike sends a clear message that we will not take it anymore. Furthermore, the strike declares that we want to impeach To accuse; to charge a liability upon; to sue. U.S. needs universal health care

I appreciated Dr. Todd Huffman's Commentary piece (Register-Guard, July 10) titled "Halting the collapse of health care."

It is a national disgrace that the United States spends far more per capita [Latin, By the heads or polls.] A term used in the Descent and Distribution of the estate of one who dies without a will. It means to share and share alike according to the number of individuals.  for health care than any other nation in the world, yet even at this high price still does not provide health coverage to 45 million Americans, most of whom are productive, working citizens who happen to hold jobs that do not provide health coverage benefits. As far as I know, we are the only First World nation on Earth that does not have a health care system that provides close to universal coverage to its citizens.

We need to make it a national priority to achieve universal health care coverage in the United States, then begin the process of figuring out how to make it happen. The voucher system that Dr. Huffman described in his column is certainly worthy of close scrutiny and consideration. Whatever we do, continuing the current dysfunctional and unfair system we have should not be an option.

Why not ban owning hammers?

Where is the liberal outcry to outlaw hammers since the newspaper reported the senseless murders of three people in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho Coeur d'Alene (IPA: [kɚ də liːn]) is the county seat and largest city of Kootenai County, Idaho, United States.  (Register-Guard, July 9)? They were believed to have been bludgeoned to death with a hammer.

Like the anti-gun mentality, hammers kill people just as guns kill people - so outlaw the ownership of hammers.

The public has spoken. It does not want "clarifying and reforming Measure 37." It wants enforcement of Measure 37. That is what Oregon voters rightly expect. Said voters expressed their desire in an election.
