LETTERS IN THE EDITOR'S MAILBAG.Byline: The Register-Guard Where was girl's life jacket? Shame on The Register-Guard for printing a picture of a 10-year-old girl shown floating on an inner-tube on the Willamette River Willamette River River, northwestern Oregon, U.S. It flows north for 300 mi (485 km) into the Columbia River near Portland. Oregon's most populous cities are in its valley. The Fremont Bridge, a steel arch with a main span of 1,225 ft (373 m), crosses the river at Portland. (Register-Guard, July 12). Did you notice one huge problem with this scene? Where is the life jacket that this young girl should be wearing? After all the drowning reports, the newspaper goes and show this. Have you no sense of responsibility for the behavior you represent in the news? The newspaper is glorifying, by publishing this photo, irresponsible water safety practices. Please think before you print! CHRISTINE HANSON Eugene Iraq war Iraq War: see under Persian Gulf Wars. Iraq War or Second Persian Gulf War Brief conflict in 2003 between Iraq and a combined force of troops largely from the U.S. and Great Britain; and a subsequent U.S. isn't good for anyone I have read some outrageous rationalizations for this disastrous war in Iraq, but never have I heard even the most right-wing individual make the claim that it is good for the economy by citing the makers of combat boots, bullets and prostheses Prostheses A synthetic object that resembles a missing anatomical part. Mentioned in: Microphthalmia and Anophthalmia . It is a wonder Deborah Frisch (letters, July 13) did not mention funeral directors and casket makers. She obviously has no one in harm's way harm's way n. A risky position; danger: a place for the children that is out of harm's way; ships that sail into harm's way. and is unbelievably insensitive to those who do and others who care for our troops' welfare. Frisch might also check her facts. There are no dots to connect. Hasn't she heard, Iraq did not attack us on Sept. 11. This is one voter who had been a Republican for years who is now a proud Democrat because of the current dictatorship in our country and will definitely vote to change the direction of this wonderful country. BETTY HILDEBRAND Florence Gay marriage is a trivial issue The other day, I heard an otherwise intelligent friend claim that recognizing a nonheterosexual union of two adults as a marriage threatens American society. Frankly, I do not understand. I am not a stupid person. I have reasonable test scores, I hold a number of academic degrees and I have spent more than half a century trying to learn something from every encounter. But I do not understand. How can what happens between the people who live next door or across the country threaten my marriage or the marriage of anybody else? The pre-publicity for the political party conventions says this will be a big issue of the presidential campaign. Why? Never mind the money being wasted on these massive non-events. Do we not have serious matters to discuss? We have issues of health care, education and national policy. This is not unique. All nations have problems. But no nation ever solved its significant issues by concentrating on trivia. Married or not married is a question for churches, not courts. Let the churches argue about it. They have a lot of practice at such arguments. The function of government is to take administrative notice of such relationships, not define them. Could we please concentrate on the real problems that truly are threats to the republic? MICHAEL A. CARTER Eugene Was letter 'tongue in cheek'? I presume Deborah Frisch's letter on July 13 is an attempt at "tongue in cheek" and not in fact "foot in mouth." Connecting the dots with cynicism, whether by liberals or conservatives, hardly explains or justifies the results. To suggest that our leaders are elected by race or religion is less than humorous. We all know that the offices are bought long before the election. As for choice - how many black Southern Baptists are on the ballot? CARL SMITH Springfield Transsexual trans·sex·u·al n. A person who strongly identifies with the opposite gender and who chooses to live as a member of the opposite gender or to become one by surgery. adj. 1. Of or relating to such a person. 2. support important I would like to let everyone know how I feel. As a transsexual who has transitioned all the way, I feel very welcomed in most places I go. The people of the Eugene-Springfield area have been very supportive of me in my transitioning phase, and I want to thank all of you. There have been some key people, and you know who you are, who have helped me through the hard times. If it wasn't for you, I would not have made it. I feel very lucky to have my dear friends and loving relatives that have supported me in my journey. I do know there are still some people out there who will not accept transsexual people, but we can still get along. Most people are still afraid of the restrooms. People do have their sensitivities, and that is one. I have only encountered this twice in the last two years of my transitioning. This has been my only experience of discrimination, besides being looked at funny. I got over that. I just wanted to say thanks publicly to all. SHEILA COATS Eugene Bush is a courageous president I want George W. Bush re-elected in November because I think he is the most courageous president this nation has seen in a very long time. Not only has he had the wisdom of going after the terrorists in this world, he has gotten this country out of a major economic hardship due to Sept. 11. I am proud that he is our nation's leader. I feel safe, my children feel safe and it is all thanks to President Bush. He has simplified complex issues into single sentences and arranged them in such a way as to portray an ill-defined group of people as hypocrites, which is hardly impressive. The important insight that he makes is that this is the level of sophistication so·phis·ti·cate v. so·phis·ti·cat·ed, so·phis·ti·cat·ing, so·phis·ti·cates v.tr. 1. The question Richey should ask himself is: Are those adults and their arguments worthy of being your role models, regardless of your political bias? MAX KESSLER Eugene Moore distorts Bush reaction A lot of hot air has been expelled over the seven minutes in the Michael Moore After all, they went into the theater yearning to have their preconceived notions reinforced. Members of the left proclaim their open minds. Yet here they have an opportunity to look at both sides, and they took the low road, again. That President Bush was surprised and angry by the Sept. 11 murders is not in doubt. Only the most perverted per·vert·ed adj. 1. Deviating from what is considered normal or correct. 2. However, had Bush been the guy the left refers to as a cowboy, he would have jumped up, run in circles and started pushing red buttons Red Buttons (February 5 1919 – July 13 2006) was the stage name of American comedian and actor Aaron Chwatt. He won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Airman Joe Kelly in Sayonara (1957), a rare dramatic role. . He did nothing of the sort. Rather, he took time to consider his options, because, as is evidenced by his face, he was shocked, very angry and took the time to do the right thing. Moore's efforts have done us a great service. They have shown the depths of depravity to which the anti-American crowd will go in their attempts to install their feudal systems. Moore is on record as describing Americans as stupid. He should know. He has made a fortune pandering to the stupid among us. Fortunately, they are the lunatic fringe lunatic fringe - [IBM] Customers who can be relied upon to accept release 1 versions of software. minority and shrinking. Ignorance can be fixed. Stupidity is terminal. TOM PREUSS Creswell What ever happened to debate? After reading Daniel Richey's "Understanding liberal thinking" (letters, July 15) I couldn't stop thinking about his final sentence. "And just for the record, I am 15 years old." His letter was very typical of so many others I have seen in this section over the last several years. It wasn't that his particular viewpoint was unmistakable or that his use of a straw man argument was unique to his political inclinations. What made his letter so amazingly similar to so many others, regardless of political leanings, is that it made no attempt to persuade. Whatever happened to the form of discussion known as debate? I don't mean argument or hurling hurling, outdoor ball and stick game similar to field hockey (see hockey, field). The national pastime of Ireland, it was played for many centuries before the Gaelic Athletic Association standardized the rules in 1884. insults or making every effort to look right no matter what the facts may be. I don't mean twisting the facts to suit my viewpoint or selectively choosing those points in a subject which happen to favor my position, while ignoring the rest. I mean debate - the honest evaluation of a subject to determine what is real, where both sides of an issue actively and enthusiastically seek out the truth. Yes, the truth - that which is the bottom line, the real deal, what is actually happening in the world and why. Richey stated, as a boy just starting high school, that he is like most of the rest of us. He has "finally figured it out." The other guy is wrong and I'm right. Don't try to confuse me with facts, argument and persuasion.
