LETTERS : LASORDA'S DEPARTURE PREMATURE.

In honor of the long-standing tradition of Dodgers fans, manager Tom Lasorda decided to leave just a little bit early, with 56 games to go in his 20th season.

Lasorda insisted his departure was voluntary. Yeah, sure, like being in the Iraqi infantry was voluntary. Tommy got the blue boot from the Big Dodger in the Skybox sky·box

I read about Tom Lasorda retiring with tears in my eyes In My Eyes was a Boston straight edge band that spearheaded the 1997 youth crew revival along with Ten Yard Fight, Bane, The Trust, Fastbreak and Floorpunch. The band and its members were a part of the hot bed that was the Boston music scene in the late 90's and early 2000's. . I also was peeling onions at the time.

Lasorda will be an asset to the Dodgers in any capacity, and as anyone who ever ate with him knows, his capacity is huge.

Tommy was a marvelous manager, he's a good friend and an insulation to all. He should be raised to a pinochle pinochle (pē`nŭ'kəl), card game, probably derived from bezique, that was developed in the United States in the 19th cent. Pinochle is played by two, three, or four players, with a deck of 48 cards containing two each of the aces, face  and left there.

He is a credit to baseball, a credit to sportsmanship in general and a credit to his family . . . and that's a lot of credit for a guy with a seasonal job.

My wife, Joanie, has a picture on her wall, my two sons call him Uncle Tommy and we have been close for a long time.

The only thing I dislike about Tommy Lasorda

is that he gets more laughs than I do . . . and with my material.

, I almost cried.

When Magic attempted to return, I was thrilled.

When he retired again, I was upset.

When he came back this past NBA season, I was quite excited.

When he decided to retire from the NBA permanently at season's end, I was disappointed.

When Magic claimed during NBC's Olympic coverage that he wanted to play with Shaquille O'Neal, and thus would return to the Lakers in January, I was confused.

When Magic changed his mind a few days later and decided he's not ever going to play, I became disgusted.

I wish Magic Johnson would make up his mind . . . and quit playing with mine.

Asterisk for Leslie

Would anyone consider it a real feat if Charles Barkley scored 100 points over a one-armed man? Would it be a stunning achievement if swimmer Amy Van Dyken Amy Van Dyken (born February 15, 1973 in Englewood, Colorado) is an American swimmer who has six career Olympic gold medals. Four of these gold medals came in the 1996 Summer Olympics, making her the first American woman to accomplish such a feat.  beat someone by a record 20 seconds if the opponent was a member of a club team?

Of course not.

Considering that, we should not hold up Lisa Leslie's so-called achievement of scoring 101 points over a high school squad that couldn't field a complete team. That team was several players short. It's a fact her bio conveniently fails to point out.

Olympic thoughts

The so-called Dream Team put us to shame, not because of its athletic ability but by the lack of sportsmanship. I was appalled to hear them speak of what was supposed to be friendly competition. I enjoy it when the home team wins, but not when it is out for blood.

Ireland's Michelle Smith beats an American swimmer and foul play is suspected. Would there be a drug question if it was one of ours?

Camarillo

I cannot believe there has not been hundreds of letters protesting the so-called Dream Team of professional millionaires being pitted against amateurs from around the world. The only Dream Team is the women's basketball team. They are, at least in the Olympic tradition, amateurs. Why has the Olympics commission permitted a professional team to play against amateurs? Money? It is the USA who has polluted this amateur contest.

It would have been nice if Kerri Strug had time to consider the pros and cons pros and cons
Noun, pl

the advantages and disadvantages of a situation [Latin pro for + con(tra) against]
of her famous vault, but the fact is there wasn't time.

The second-guessing of her decision is distracting from her heroics.

Strug's coach did what he thought was best at the moment and under the circumstances. He was hired for the job because he is the type of man he is. He is a winner. He is a driver.

Strug, more than a gold medalist, is an inspiration - not just to other gymnasts, but to all of us who would rather sit down when the job looks too tough.

Maybe if we all had a little more Strug in us, we might be winners.
