LETTERMAN'S MOVE CALLS FOR MAALOX(R)

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The top 10 reasons David Letterman could use a bottle of Maalox?
You won't find this on NBC late night TV. But as Letterman leaves NBC's "Late Night" for the new "Late Show" on CBS, the names Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Chevy Chase, and Ted Koppel are sure to be at the top of this list. Come Aug. 3O, he'll be competing with these hosts to capture the audiences of late night.
This may prove to be more challenging a feat than propelling himself onto a Velcro wall, and thus Letterman has been selected as the latest recipient of a Maalox Moments(TM) Award.
June 25 marked the final episode of "Late Night With David Letterman," as Letterman's 11-year run with NBC comes to a close. He has accepted a three-year, $42 million offer from CBS, filling the 11:35 p.m. time slot. Since Johnny Carson left "The Tonight Show" after 3O years in May 1992, the only show to increase its ratings has been Koppel's "Nightline." Letterman's challenge is to fill CBS' late night void, and to capture those ratings points waiting to be won by his proven formula for success.
"David Letterman has entertained audiences for years with his unique humor and talent as a late-night host," said James Barickman, Rhone- Poulenc Rorer (RPR) Inc.'s category development director for Maalox(R). "Letterman's CBS debut will be a great Maalox Moment in his life, as he attempts to establish a new niche for himself in the hard-hitting world of entertainment." Maalox Moments occur when life's pressures and unpredictabilities create acid indigestion, gas or heartburn just when you need to be your best.
As part of the award, Letterman will receive a supply of Extra Strength Maalox tablets to help defend him against acid indigestion or heartburn that may accompany stressful and challenging situations in the future. In addition, he will receive a "Maalox Moments Survival Kit" to help him survive any future shellfire from the ensuing late night wars.
The Maalox Moments Award is presented on a regular basis to individuals or groups who successfully manage a stressful situation that has occurred in any aspect of their daily (or nightly) lives. Past recipients have included Barbara Bush, the coaches of the 1992 Superbowl teams, comedian Jay Leno, Olympic figure skater Paul Wylie, President Bill Clinton, and White House advisor David Gergen.
Rhone-Poulenc Rorer is a global pharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing of human pharmaceuticals. The company reported sales of $4.1 billion and invested more than $500 million in research and development in 1992.
