Building blocks

I love your magazine and it is a big help to me in this field. I recently recommended that our hospital system build an assisted living as·sist·ed living

The March issue of Contemporary Long Term Care was exceptional! I look forward to reading this professional journal every month of the year. In LANs such as Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI, as well as the Internet, data is broken up and transmitted in packets (frames), each with a source and destination address.  life has changed for those of us trying to provide quality care for America's elderly and disabled. Therapy is one of the areas that can make a very big difference in how the community sees our facilities and makes an impression that lasts for years.

The "Rehab Forum" special advertising section, sponsored by NovaCare, was informative, useful, timely, and 100 percent believable. This is an example of the professional quality material that is presented by your magazine. Thank you for your first-class style.

Complementary care

I was reading with interest the article in March's issue on clinical care in assisted living ("Spotlight On"), thinking that the addition of a medical officer to oversee and establish policy for assisted living was a tremendous idea that would help to ensure the best services possible for people in need. But when Dr. Gifford was asked if all she was describing sounded like a nursing home, her response surprised me.

To say that nursing homes have almost nothing in the way of prevention angered me. She also insinuated that everything done in a nursing home is done only because of a rule or regulation. I am sure she has been in a lot of nursing homes, but where?

I am proud of the nursing facilities in Nebraska. We have many programs to prevent problems and encourage wellness in our residents. Restorative nursing programs and physical therapy, along with walking programs and group exercise, have long been an integral part of nursing facility care, at least in Nebraska.

I believe that nursing facilities and assisted living communities can and should work together, each caring for the resident that is in need of the services offered by either place. I am not against transferring a resident of my facility to assisted living when they no longer require all the services in my facility. Can Dr. Gifford say the same? I am in the business of caring for people and will do whatever I can to improve the industry, except malign and put down assisted living.

There is a place for both nursing facility care and assisted living. We must work together doing what is best for the growing numbers of elderly in our communities.

Well said

Congratulations on your excellent article in the April issue ("Going postal"). As a retired police officer who has had to deal with many instances as you describe, I have to agree with everything you said.

Congratulations to contributing writer Wendy Bonifazi on a wonderful article ("Going Postal," April 1999). She certainly has a knack for pulling together many different thoughts into a smooth piece.

An accurate appraisal

I enjoyed the May issue of Contemporary. The article that Wendy Bonifazi wrote about us ("Surviving the Survey") was, in my opinion, accurate, interesting, and well written. I know how hard she works as she must have called me at least three times and reviewed several pages of materials that she asked me to fax to her.

I am sometimes reluctant to talk to reporters because of my concern about being misquoted. I must say that Wendy did an accurate job. Keep up the good work at Contemporary.
