 in Valencia. Now permanently headquartered on Railroad Avenue in downtown Newhall, the group has 60 volunteers who work every week to sort food, prepare bags and assist clients with short-term needs. Their mission statement is simple: No child in the Santa Clarita Valley should go to bed hungry.

To participate in the food drive, residents simply leave a bag or box of nonperishable food next to their mailboxes Saturday morning. Letter carriers will pick up the food and deliver it to the pantry for distribution.

Nationally, letter carriers collected more than 70,000,000 pounds of food in 2004. The annual campaign is part of the ``Stamp Out Hunger'' program, which also receives a million pounds of soup from Campbell's Soup Co.
