LET THE SEASON BEGIN; HOLLYWOOD BOWL MOMENTS GET UNDER WAY WITH ROUSING FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND.

Byline: Reed Johnson Reed Cameron Johnson (born December 8, 1976 in Riverside, California) is an outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League East division of Major League Baseball. He weighs 180 lb (82 kg) and is 5'10" tall.  Daily News Staff Writer

John Mauceri John Mauceri (born 1945, New York) is an American conductor, producer and composer for theatre, opera and television. He was a protege of Leonard Bernstein.[1]  is having a Lucille Ball moment. He's used to them by now. Like knee-high corn in Iowa, or baseball's all-star break, they crop up around the Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution. , a sure sign that summer is under way and the Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. The "bowl" in this context is the natural cavity in the earth into which the amphitheater is built, rather than the shape of the  season is about to begin in earnest.

Usually, they occur around the time Mauceri and his family check into their Laurel Canyon Laurel Canyon can refer to several things:

  • Laurel Canyon Boulevard, a street that connects the San Fernando Valley to Hollywood that passes through Laurel Canyon
house - their summer home away from home for the past seven years.

Then come staff meetings, a careful study of orchestral arrangements and a tight 1-1/2 days of rehearsals before Mauceri picks up the baton again - as he will at 7:30 tonight.

``It's like a sitcom in a way, because it's a new season and you enter the house and all the characters are back,'' says the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra's principal conductor, shaking off jet lag jet lag

from an all-day flight from Italy.

``The one time I met Lucille Ball, she said the hardest part of doing `I Love Lucy' was that she opened the door and it was the same set (every episode), only she had different lines.''

Yet ``there's a comfort,'' Mauceri says, in working year after year with a highly talented group of musicians, at what is arguably America's most famous outdoor concert venue. If summering at the Bowl has become a routine for Mauceri, it's clearly one he welcomes.

``When we were created, a lot of people thought it was going to be this pickup orchestra with a rotating-door policy,'' he says. ``Nothing could be further from the truth. But nonetheless, even though you're among family, you're still starting from scratch every week.''

The ability to summon music from the ground up helps explain why the Hollywood Bowl, now in its 77th year, has become an L.A. seasonal fixture.

From its leisurely beginnings in 1922 - seven years before the famous art deco art deco (ärt dĕkō`; är dākō`, ärt) or art moderne (är môdĕrn`, ärt)  band shell was added - the Bowl has been a place where culture happens casually. Where winter at the Music Center means to stir the soul, summer at the Bowl aims to lift the spirits. Where the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is one of the halls in the Los Angeles Music Center (which is one of the three largest performing arts centers in the United States). The Music Center's other halls include the Mark Taper Forum, Ahmanson Theatre, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.  is candelabra and strong coffee, the Bowl is fireflies and champagne.

Of course, there are certain constants at the Bowl, such as the fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

And you always can count on perennials such as Beethoven's ``Fifth Symphony'' and John Williams' Night at the Movies to poke their heads through the soil.

Typically mixed bag

But like a Dodger pitcher on opening day, Mauceri likes to throw out a few new wrinkles every season. This year's Bowl lineup offers a typically mixed bag of classical, jazz, opera and popular music.

Which is how it should be, says singer-actress Della Reese Della Reese (born Delloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931), is a famous American Emmy nominated actor and Grammy nominated singer. She started her career in the late 1950s as a successful Jazz singer, best known for her 1959 hit single "Don't You Know". , star of TV's ``Touched by an Angel,'' who will be the featured soloist in three Fourth of July weekend concerts, tonight through Sunday. Reese will perform a new song of her own, ``Touched by an Angel,'' plus patriotic standards such as ``America the Beautiful America the Beautiful

``The excitement for me comes with the people,'' Reese says jovially jo·vi·al

. ``I don't care if it (the concert) is in a cardboard box. This is not to underplay the importance of the Hollywood Bowl, but this is about being with the people - when I get with the people, and I get that thang going with people.''

Since his appointment as the newly formed orchestra's leader in 1991, Mauceri's ``thang'' has been to advocate new orchestral works, American music of all stripes, and new arrangements that plumb musical insights from old chestnuts.

Among the season's novelties will be the L.A. premiere of Paul McCartney's symphonic poem ``Standing Stone.'' The July 19 concert will be dedicated to Linda McCartney, late wife of the former Beatles member, and its text will be read by Gloria Stuart, the genteel actress who played the elderly version of Kate Winslett's character in ``Titantic.''

The first time he heard ``Standing Stone,'' Mauceri says, ``I really wasn't sure it was a good work. But like any work that takes a long time to perform, you have to give it its time. You have to give a Mahler symphony its time; it's not a three-minute song. I think that the work is important enough for us to bring it to our public and make it serious.''

Both at home and abroad, Mauceri has endeavored to punch through the wall between classical and popular music. His advocacy of Hollywood film music is perhaps the most visible way he has steered the Bowl from its traditional diet of German Romanticism.

Wider appeal

Broadening the Bowl's appeal also appears to be a top priority of L.A. Philharmonic executive vice president and managing director Willem Wijnbergen, who succeeded Ernest Fleischmann earlier this year. In April, Wijnbergen took over management of the Bowl, leaving its previous manager, Anne Parsons, in charge of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Wijnbergen described the moves as ``preliminary steps in a process aimed toward further expanding the Hollywood Bowl audience, as well as improving the overall quality of the Bowl experience.''

While it's unclear what Wijnbergen has in mind, it's probably safe to bet that next July 4, Mauceri and company will be back playing the same lump-in-the-throat music that still gets to audiences - and even some performers.

``I've been all over the world many times, and I was rehearsing `America the Beautiful' and it almost brought me to tears,'' says Reese. ``I can't really explain it any better, this surge in me.''

Mark it down as one of those Hollywood Bowl thangs.
