Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley's largest private school broke ground Friday for a gymnasium and gymnastics center financed through a $2.9 million fundraising campaign.

Desert Christian Schools' preschool, elementary and middle school students lined up along what will be the exterior walls of the two buildings, and youngsters turned the first shovelsfull of dirt - sand, actually, in the school playground.

``These two buildings...represent a very significant milestone for Desert Christian Schools,'' executive director Cecil Swetland said at the ceremony.

The two buildings are expected to be completed by fall 2007 at Desert Christian's elementary and middle school campus on 15th Street West.

Desert Christian began a four-year fundraising campaign in October 2005 to buy the Desert Christian High campus that it had been leasing from the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

So far the campaign has received more than $2.5 million in contributions and pledges, Swetland said.

Of the funds raised, $160,000 came from automobile raffles sponsored by local car dealers and other businesses.

Auctions, banquets and jogathons, skateathons and bowlathons also are raising funds.

The gymnasium will have room for basketball and volleyball courts and will be used for physical education classes, before- and afterschool af·ter·school

The second building will be used by some 400 youngsters enrolled in Desert Christian's gymnastics program.
