LET'S PUT ON A SHOW! KIDS LEARN ACTING, SINGING AT SUMMER CAMP.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

NEWHALL - They might not know much about the 1950s, but kids practicing a dance routine and singing ``sha-na-na-na-na-na'' looked liked doo-wopping pros Monday at the first day of the Canyon Theater Guild's summer camp.

By the end of the week, the kids will have learned six songs, six dances, a 21-page script, and will perform a 25-minute mini musical production - free - for the community.

``There's nothing like the feeling that they get when the show goes on,'' said Phil Schwadron, 33, assistant to the camp director. ``Last year, the kids went wild when the show went off. They couldn't believe they did it.

``It's thrilling,'' Schwadron added. ``It's really thrilling for them.''

camp is organized by the Canyon Theater Guild to build character, self-confidence and allow the kids to learn some new skills and, most of all, have some fun.

``The self-confidence that can emerge from a camp like this is incredible,'' Schwadron said. ``On Monday, they come in saying they can't sing and by Friday, they're singing their hearts out.''

Camp Director Ingrid Boydston first played some improvisational games with the kids to familiarize them with each other and the stage.

This year, the camp is performing a `50s version of ``Little Red Riding Hood Noun 1. Little Red Riding Hood - a girl in a fairy tale who meets a wolf while going to visit her grandmother ,'' and students were asked to audition audition /au·di·tion/ (aw-dish´un) hearing.

``I tried out for everything but the wolf,'' said Rachel Abrams, 9, who was attending the camp for the first time. ``It's fun. We get to act.''

Trent Stephens, 11, said he believes he should be selected as the wolf, but he also auditioned for the role of granny.

``This is really fun,'' Trent said. ``I think I might be the wolf.''

Trent said he has been to the camp several times and his favorite part is the grand finale For the music notation program, see .

``I like performing the show at the end,'' he said. ``Last year, we did great.''
