Children led celebrations of Earth Day on Tuesday in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , with green education fairs and parades for students in Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. While second- and third-graders from Granada Elementary School in Granada Hills marched down Chatsworth Street bearing Earth Day-themed posters for local businesses, students from 11 schools from throughout the city congregated at Griffith Park to learn how they can improve the city's water, air and quality of life.

``We're trying to get students to be aware of and understand environmental sustainability and actually take on actions that support the environment,'' said Walter Zeisl, spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Green L.A. program.

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  students participated in hands-on exhibits about rescued animals, clean cars and pollution-reduction efforts.

While environmental groups and government agencies will continue to host green celebrations through the month, Tuesday was the official Earth Day, an event created in 1970 to promote education and activism for a healthier environment.

At Granada Elementary School, about 40 students participated in their fifth annual Earth Day walk, a trek along Chatsworth Street urging residents and business owners to recycle, save the environment or just ``Honk honk Pediatrics A widely-transmitted precordial whoop, described as a high-pitched, musical, late systolic murmur in some Pts with mitral valve prolapse–MVP, a sound attributed to resonation of the valve leaflets and chordae; non-honkers with MVP may be made  if you love the earth'' as a student wearing a sandwich board proclaimed.

Participating in Earth Day activities helps the children learn about ecology and global environmental issues in their science classes, third-grade teacher Mark Ellis said.

``This is kind of a way to bring what they're learning at school into the real world and giving them an opportunity to share what they're learning with the community.''
