LEGO Company Introduces High-Tech Line of Robotics Products.

ENFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 1998--The LEGO Company announces the introduction of LEGO(R) MINDSTORMS(TM), (www.LEGOMINDSTORMS.com) a new range of products that enables children ages 11 and up to design and program real robots Real Robots was the name of a fortnightly magazine by Eaglemoss Publications. Developed in partnership with Reading University, it allowed the reader to build a robot, "Cybot", and later a companion robot, "Tom".  that move, act, and think on their own. With LEGO MINDSTORMS Lego Mindstorms is a line of Lego sets combining programmable bricks with electric motors, sensors, Lego bricks, and Lego Technic pieces (such as gears, axles, beams, and pneumatic parts) to build robots and other automated or interactive systems.  children can create everything from a light-sensitive intruder alarm to a robotic rover that can follow a trail, move around obstacles, and even duck into dark corners. The initial product line, which includes four items, launches in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. , the revolutionary LEGO Microcomputer:

The heart of this new system is the RCX, an autonomous LEGO microcomputer that can be programmed using a PC. The RCX serves as the brain of LEGO MINDSTORMS inventions. It uses sensors to take input from its environment, processes data, and signals output motors to turn on and off. Users first build their robot using the RCX and LEGO pieces. Then they create a program for their invention using RCX Code, a simple, powerful programming language. Next, they download their program to the RCX using a special infrared transmitter. Their creation can now interact with the environment, fully autonomous from the computer.

LEGO MINDSTORMS Products:

The RCX is featured in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System, the core set in this new system. The Robotics Invention System includes over 700 LEGO pieces, the RCX, infrared transmitter, light and touch sensors, motors, gears, and a Constructopedia building guide. The Robotics Invention System provides children with guidance to build working robots in under an hour, as well as inspiration for more complex robotic inventions. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System has an estimated retail price of $200.

"The philosophy behind LEGO MINDSTORMS is to allow children not only to understand technology but also to become creative masters of it. This happens when they design, construct, and program their own real, intelligent inventions," states Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (born December 27, 1947) was the chief executive of Lego between 1979 and 2004.
