LEGAL FOUNDATION BESTOWS AWARDS : FIREFIGHTERS, POLICE OFFICERS, PUPILS HONORED.
The Valley Community Legal Foundation held its annual Law Day USA luncheon Friday, honoring local law enforcement officers and firefighters for community service and extraordinary performance in the line of duty.
From the Los Angeles County Fire Department, award winners were firefighters Ralph Urquiza, Domonic Finks and Bart Matta.
In the law enforcement category, the recipients were Los Angeles Police Department Detective Bob Bogison, sheriff's Deputy Julia Pausch, California Highway Patrol Officer Dwight McDonald and San Fernando city police Sgt. William Miron.
Lee Kanon Alpert, past president of the legal foundation, also presented the group's first Media Award to Daily News columnist Dennis McCarthy.
Special awards were given to local students for essays and artworks on the Law Day theme, ``United States Constitution - the Original American Dream.''
Student award winners were Timothy Henry, a fourth-grader at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies; Megan Lagerson, a fifth-grader at Woodlake Elementary School; Krista Tadevic, a first-grader at Woodlake Elementary School; Devan Jaganath, a fourth-grader at Pomelo Drive Elementary School; and Taylor Zagnoli, a fifth-grader at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies.
Leonardo Krog, a student at the University of La Verne, was awarded the foundation's Stanley Lintz Scholarship Award, honoring the memory of the former president of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association, who died in 1980.
Retired California Supreme Court Justice Armand Arabian delivered the keynote address, and KNBC-TV (Channel 4) weatherman Christopher Nance served as master of ceremonies for the luncheon, attended by more than 300 people at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys.
