``We can turn tragedy into change,'' Chu said.

The fellowship advocates for such legislation, works with hate crime victims and coordinates with various organizations and officials. It also has an education and outreach component, which includes the new speaker series.

Author and activist Helen Zia was the featured guest at Friday's lecture at the Japanese American National Museum The Japanese American National Museum opened its doors in 1992. The museum is located in the Little Tokyo area near downtown Los Angeles, California. It is devoted to preserving the history and culture of Japanese Americans. . The event, titled ``Words of Empowerment: Creating a Nonviolent Society Through Peace Advocacy,'' was presented by the Asian Pacific American Legal Center and hosted by the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy.
