LEBANON - Nov. 3 - MPs Wants Syrian Troops Redeployed.
With parliament debating PM Hariri's new government plan, MP
and Druze leader Walid Jumblatt demands a redeployment of Syria's
35,000 troops soil in line with the 1990 Ta'if agreement, saying:
"I do understand the importance of stationing some Syrian troops
(in Lebanon) for strategic purposes, but I do hope the Syrian leadership
will review some of the points. The talk that the Syrian presence is
necessary, legitimate and temporary is vague...and if the presence is
necessary then let us decide its timetable". Leading Christian MP
Albert Moukhaiber urges Syria to leave this country and warns of active
opposition to its presence. (The calls coincide with a relentless
campaign by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir to end the Syrian
presence in Lebanon. Jumblatt has forged alliances with Christian
figures strongly opposed to the Syrian presence, alliances which helped
him make a strong showing in the Aug. general elections. Christian
hardliners opposed to Syria's presence were kept out of
Hariri's new cabinet).
