Last year the letter carriers delivered 30 tons of food to the pantry, which serves about 3,000 clients, more than half of them children. This is the association's 15th annual food collection campaign, timed for the summer when food banks run low and children on summer break can't rely on school lunch programs. "The food donated by the residents of Santa Clarita through the letter carriers' food drive carries us through the summer months when donations are at their slowest and need is the highest," said Belinda Crawford, the pantry's executive director. Residents are asked to leave boxes or bags of food in nonbreakable packaging next to their mailboxes before the mail arrives. The goal this year is to exceed the 30 tons donated last year. |
