The computer lab at Noble Elementary School elementary school: see school.  will soon be doing double duty.

The lab at the North Hills school opened in January January: see month.  and students have been developing their computer skills on the 32 Mac computers there. Beginning Saturday Saturday: see week; Sabbath.  March 25, the lab will be open to parents, said Valerie Name

On the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, workshops will be held for parents from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Topics will include basic computer skills as well as information parents should consider when buying a home computer. Parents will learn what hardware and software are needed for their children to research and write papers. Sometimes at a store, a salesperson may try to sell all the bells and whistles A slang English term for exceptional features in some product. In the computer field, it typically refers to functions in software that may be greatly appreciated by some users, even though they may not be necessary most of the time.  that aren't necessarily needed, Codron pointed out.

``The new program is a win-win for parents and students,'' she said. Students will benefit because their parents will be able to help them with their homework more effectively. Parents will get the added benefit of learning how to incorporate their computer skills into their own lives. ``For example, they'll learn how to apply for jobs online,'' Codron said.

She said fliers with questionnaires were sent home with students recently. Parents can complete the questionnaire and let school officials know what topics they would like covered in the workshops.

Codron said parents don't have to worry about finding a baby sitter to watch their children while they attend Saturday workshops. The school already has a program in which volunteers read to students; it runs concurrently with the new parent computer workshops, making it an excellent child care option.

Codron is working with Carlos Palacios, the computer lab resource teacher, on the new endeavor.
