But his biggest surprise while tailing Katherine School Principal Beverley Radloff had nothing to do with her schedule. Instead, it was the demonstration of affection the pupils lavished on Radloff. Durgin was among 29 local business and community leaders who participated in the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. For Durgin - himself an educator of sorts - the entire morning was a time for learning. ``I didn't expect as much activity as I've seen,'' he said about Radloff's role in handling discipline problems, dealing with parents, helping to organize school events and maintaining contact with teachers and pupils. Durgin, who once worked in the dairy and food-processing business, recently purchased the local franchise for Mad Science, an organization specializing in after-school science programs. In 10 months of running after-school programs, Durgin said, his contacts with principals were mainly just 10- or 15-minute telephone conversations to pitch a project or schedule an after-school program. Durgin immediately said yes when a business acquaintance suggested he participate in the Principal for a Day program. ``It gives me a much better appreciation for the challenges faced by principals,'' he said. So, after all this, would Durgin ever seek a job as a school principal? ``I'm not sure the job is for everyone,'' he said. ``I think these people are much better at it than I could be. ``We need people like that.''
