, ``Sorry - lizards,'' said teaching assistant Michele Linares.

``They said, we have your lizards,'' said Linares, adding the teens were not students at the school. ``We just said, thank you very much, and they left right away.''

The chameleons, a male and two females believed pregnant, were on loan from the U.S. Department of the Interior. They are beloved by the students, whose school is nicknamed the ``Lowman Lizards.'' The students had gone home for the day before the chameleons were returned Thursday.

``The kids are going to be so excited (today) because they spend a lot of time watching them,'' said staffer Barbara Kaplan.

Judging by their color - black - the chameleons were not too happy at being taken from their aquarium in the front hallway of the school.

``They turn black when they're upset or something's not right,'' said Linares, who got the chameleons some water and fresh crickets. ``The minute I put them in their cage they turned green. They looked just absolutely happy to be home.''
