The league's past president and nominating chairwoman Karen Turchan said, ``2003 was a challenging year because of Carmen's death, but other volunteers stepped in and took over to make our annual event a success.''

The Home Tour League, which serves as part of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation, raises money for the Women's Services Department by hosting a Holiday Home Tour, a black-tie gala and a gift boutique Boutique

Last year the group raised close to $40,000 for the hospital.

Newly installed President Terry Kanowsky, who has volunteered with the Home Tour League for 10 years, said she is looking ahead to the December event and has three goals in mind to make it a success.

Kanowsky plans to continue with changes that were forced upon the group with the loss of the previous president, hopes to increase membership and wants to return the focus of the annual Home Tour event to the hospital.

``Because of Carmen's death, changes came last year, and we found out how to do things in new ways,'' Kanowsky said. ``I would like to carry that legacy forward, where we embrace change and don't wait for circumstances CIRCUMSTANCES, evidence. The particulars which accompany a fact.
     2. The facts proved are either possible or impossible, ordinary and probable, or extraordinary and improbable, recent or ancient; they may have happened near us, or afar off; they are public or
 that force us to change.''

During her acceptance speech, Kanowsky also encouraged every member to bring a friend to the group, which would double membership. She also wants people to remember that the reason for the event is to benefit the hospital.

``I think some people forget that the Home Tour, the boutique and the gala party before the tour are all events to benefit the hospital,'' Kanowsky said. ``It's a great party and people come to it because it's such a fun event, but we need to focus on the fact that it supports the hospital.''

Also installed during the ceremony were Julia Hicken, president-elect; Bev Caffarelli and Olga Joseau, vice president membership co-chairs; Debbie Burkhart, treasurer; Sheila Sheila is a common given name for a female, taken from the Gaelic name Síle/Sìle, which is believed to be a Gaelic form of Julia or Cecilia. Like "Cecil" or "Cecilia", the name means "Smart and Wise", from the Latin caecus.  Erickson, recording secretary; and Sue Smyth, corresponding secretary.

``I'm a little nervous, but it should be fun and exciting,'' Kanowsky said of the planning for this year's event, scheduled for Dec. 3 and 4. ``I look forward to working with my great team.''
