LEADING THE CHARGE.Byline: Glenn Whipp Film Writer Longtime friends George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have enjoyed a friendly game of box-office one-upmanship over the years, but they've never gone head-to-head before in the high-stakes summer - until now. Lucas' Jedi swan song, ``Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith'' arrives in theaters May 19. Six weeks later - just enough time for everybody to wave goodbye to Yoda and Vader - Spielberg's modern update of H.G. Wells' ``The War of the Worlds'' lands to vacuum up moviegoers' money. To which we say: Thank heaven for small miracles. By any measure, 2005 has been a big fat dud. The films have, by and large, stunk stunk v. A past tense and the past participle of stink. stunk Verb a past of stink stunk stink worse than ever, and moviegoers have responded in kind - box-office receipts are down a good 10 percent from this year to last. (And 2004 wasn't exactly a banner year.) So if Spielberg and Lucas, the two biggest franchise-makers, want to dive in to the summer waters, we say, ``C'mon in. Even if you fail us, it's better than watching Vin Diesel change a diaper.'' Not that we won't be holding our noses at times. (In the interest of keeping an open mind - no names.) But the summertime, failures are at least interesting and sometimes spectacular. Nicole Kidman twitching her nose as Samantha in ``Bewitched''? Jessica Simpson wearing short shorts as Daisy Duke in ``The Dukes of Hazzard''? For some odd reason, we feel compelled to watch. And then there's the actual possibility of fine filmmaking, with new movies coming from Ridley Scott (``Kingdom of Heaven''), Doug Liman (``Mr. and Mrs. Smith''), Christopher Nolan (``Batman Begins''), Walter Salles (``Dark Water''), Tim Burton (``Charlie and the Chocolate Factory''), Richard Linklater (``The Bad News Bears''), Gus Van Sant SANT South African Native Trust (``Last Days''), Wong Kar Wai (``2046''), Jim Jarmusch (``Broken Flowers'') and Ron Howard (``Cinderella Man''). So the next four months have got to be better than the last four, right? Right? Titles and release dates are accurate as of press time. Some are certain to be shuffled (anything by Miramax). And we're guessing that by the dog days of August and after a lot of sun, even ``Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo gig·o·lo n. pl. gig·o·los 1. A man who has a continuing sexual relationship with and receives financial support from a woman. 2.
