LEADING TELECOMMUNICATIONS MANUFACTURERS DEMONSTRATE DECT INTERWORKING AT CEBIT.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 1996--At CeBIT, five manufacturers of DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) A cordless phone standard mostly used in Europe; however, DECT 6.0 is increasingly used worldwide. The first DECT standards were introduced by ETSI in 1992, and DECT phones have been used as cordless home phones as  (Digital Enhanced Telecommunications) equipment - Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia, Philips and Siemens - will demonstrate interoperability between base stations and handsets of different manufacturers. This is made possible by the new GAP (Generic Access Profile
This article is about the DECT standard. For other uses see Gap (disambiguation).

The Generic Access Profile (GAP) (ETSI standard EN 300 444) describes a set of mandatory requirements to allow any conforming DECT Fixed Part (base) to inter operate with
) air interface between base stations and handsets.

GAP allows handsets to be used in multiple environments e.g. residential, business, and public areas with a DECT infrastructure. As a result of this new standard, customers can choose any variety of handsets. Also, a single handset can be used at home, in the office, or in public areas, such as shopping malls, railway stations and urban areas. The Generic Access Profile supports voice application and it is a basis for more advanced applications such as data services.

The DECT/GAP air interface initiative is supported by the European Commission (EC), the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe. ), the DECT-Forum (manufacturers), and the DECT Operators Group (DOG). The GAP-protocol has been successfully tested by accredited accredited

recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria.

It is expected that GAP will facilitate strong growth in public DECT applications, including: Wireless Local Loop (WLL See wireless local loop and PHS-WLL. ), Cordless Terminal Mobility (CTM), neighborhood (lowtier) mobility, and dual mode operations such as GSM/DECT, using dual mode handsets. Successful test operations of public DECT have proven DECT to be an economic and powerful technology for fast provision of public infrastructures.

DECT is the leading cordless communication standard addressing multiple applications. Currently, about 20 companies support DECT, among them are the leading manufacturers of telecommunications equipment. DECT applications are currently operational in more than 40 countries world-wide. Approximately 2 million systems have been shipped, mainly for residential and business applications. A number of test and commercial projects are currently demonstrating DECT's suitability for public applications in Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, and other countries in Asia and Latin America.

Ericsson's 85,000 employees are active in more than 100 countries. Their combined expertise in switching, radio and networking makes Ericsson a world leader in telecommunications.
