LEADER OF THE TRACK ROYAL SOPHOMORE HOPES TO BE CROWNED AT VENTURA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

MOORPARK - Although Michael Cybulski is hoping for a peak performance in the Southern Section Div. I 3,200-meter final next month, a win in the Ventura County championships is also important to the Royal High sophomore.

``It's pretty much for bragging rights,'' Cybulski said.

, Cybulski ran 9 minutes, 13.44 seconds for two miles, about 60 feet longer than 3,200 meters. The time moved him into second on the school's all-time list behind Randy Horney's mark of 9:08.00 set in 1974. It is the fastest time in the state by a sophomore this season and fourth overall.

Before the meet, Cybulski was so nervous that he refused to read about the competitors in his race and had trouble not getting caught up in their accomplishments during race introductions.

``I've gotten a lot more confidence that I could run with these type of guys,'' Cybulski said.

Cybulski has also showed promise in the middle distances. Last Saturday, Cybulski ran a 3:04 1,200-meter leg in the distance medley relay The Distance Medley Relay is an athletic event in which four athletes compete as part of a relay. Unlike most track relays, each member of the team runs a different distance. A Distance Medley Relay is made up of a 1200 meter leg, a 400 meter leg, an 800 meter leg, and a 1600 meter leg -  in the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. Cybulski has cut nearly 20 seconds off his time in the 3,200 and more than 10 in the 1,600.

His improvement has exceeded coach Ryan Luce's expectations. He had projected that Cybulski might run in the 9:15 to 9:20 range by the end of the season but now wouldn't be surprised if the school record is broken.

``He doesn't think about who is in the race, he gets out there and runs,'' Luce said. ``He has the talent, the drive and I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

 anybody more determined.''

Cybulski, who attended Chaminade of West Hills, was just another face in the crowd to Luce in the fall. He started the season as the Highlanders' fourth runner but moved into the No. 2 spot in the Southern Section and state championships behind Long Beach State-bound senior Dylan Jaedtke, the defending Ventura County 1,600 champion.

Luce became acquainted with Cybulski quickly. He ran 15:25 in the Southern Section finals for the school's fastest time by a sophomore over the benchmark 2.91 course at Mt. SAC. At the state meet, he ran 15:52 for the 5,000-meter Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. While Cybulski still has a ways to go to equal the Ventura County 3,200 record of 8:58.60 set by Agoura's Bryan Dameworth in 1990, the Moorpark High stadium record of 9:21.67 set by Price last year could fall.

Cybulski plans to stay with the lead pack for at least the first mile and then force the pace if the splits start to slack.

``My plan is to go with a mile to go,'' Cybulski said. ``If the pace is fast, I'll stay with it. If not, I'll go for the win.''
