LEADER HUNT EXPANDED BY MUROC BOARD SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT STILL SOUGHT.

Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  -- Muroc Joint Unified School District's search for a new superintendent will be expanded to include applicants from outside the school district.

Trustees initially sought applicants from among district employees, drawing two applicants: one has since decided to leave the district and the other has withdrawn from consideration, trustees said.

``This is the time for hiring people right now. If we postponed that any further, we might lose the opportunity for people who are looking now,'' board president Chuck James Charles Hamilton "Chuck" James (born November 9, 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia) is a starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.  said. ``To start over now and ask (district) people to turn in resumes and go through those and still wonder what was outside, that would be a lost window of opportunity.''

The board is seeking to replace Superintendent Mike Summerbell, who is retiring in August after 11 years at Muroc and two years in the top post.

The superintendent search will remain open to district employees. The deadline to apply is May 26, and the board will meet May 31 to screen applicants and pick which ones they want to interview.

Muroc has 2,300 students at seven schools in Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  and North Edwards and at Edwards Air Force Base.

The board at Wednesday's meeting came up with a list of desired qualifications for a superintendent, including a master's degree master's degree

Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  through grade 12; a minimum of three years of teaching experience; a minimum of five years administrative experience; and familiarity with the federal impact aid program.

Muroc receives federal impact aid to provide a source of revenue because the 301,000-acre base and its residents are exempt from local taxes.

Candidates also must ``desire to work in a small remote district, obtain respect in local communities, and lead these communities in their efforts to maintain and improve the quality of education in their schools,'' the job posting said.
