LCI INTERNATIONAL TO DEMONSTRATE PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES AT TENNIS TOURNAMENT

DUBLIN, Ohio, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- LCI International (NASDAQ-NMS: LCII) today announced that it will demonstrate Personal Communications Services (PCS) technology at the 1993 Big Bear Champions tennis tournament to be held Aug. 25-29 at the New Albany Country Club. While attending the tournament, guests of LCI, guests of other corporate sponsors and New Albany Country Club members will be given portable handsets and will be allowed to place calls using a Northern Telecom Companion wireless communications system.
The demonstration will test the benefits of linking PCS systems like Northern Telecom's with all-digital long distance networks like LCI's and will allow tournament guests to experience the benefits of mobility using all-digital wireless technology.
"We have learned from previous experiments with the interface characteristics and reliability associated with Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)-based spread spectrum technology," said Matthew Wald, manager of business development with LCI. "This trial gives us the opportunity to extend this experiment to CT2-based handset and base station technologies and to learn their strengths and weaknesses. Our understanding of these emerging technologies is important to our development of an Advanced Intelligent Network capable of servicing our customers' needs into the next decade and beyond."
"LCI was awarded an experimental license to develop and test wireless communications in 1990," explained H. Brian Thompson, LCI's chairman. "Since then, we have been working to show the benefits of using our all-digital fiber optic network in conjunction with PCS technology. We are pleased to be working with Northern Telecom, using its Companion wireless communications system to demonstrate the high- quality voice communication that this technology provides. As the official long-distance company of The Champions Tour, we felt that this was the perfect venue to demonstrate this technology."
