Lab Perfecting Electrical Soil Cleaning Process
 Lab scientists have successfully tested an electrical soil-heating process to clean gasoline and other solvents from soil and ground water. (NOTE: news release issued last week.)

 Laboratory researchers have used optic sensors for the first time to detect scattered light to locate and identify gasoline and other non- acqueous liquids below the surface of the ground. (NOTE: News release issued last week.)

 A recent lab report describes "dynamic underground stripping," a combination of steam injection and electric heating, as a technique to push waste in ground water to a central extraction well where it can be pumped out and cleaned.

New Energy Directorate Formed
 A new Energy Directorate has been established at the lab to develop commercially attractive energy technologies which can provide energy security without significant adverse effects on the environment while stimulating economic growth and improving the competitiveness of U.S. industry. The directorate will be divided into three program areas: magnetic fusion energy, alternative fuels and electrical power and storage, and fission energy and nuclear systems safety.

 'EVE' AWARD TO LAB


Federal Exemplary Voluntary Effort Award
 The laboratory has been selected as a recipient of the U.S. Department of Labor Federal Contract Compliance Programs' Exemplary Voluntary Effort Award. The award salutes government contractors who set themselves apart by voluntarily implementing innovative programs that have increased the employment opportunities for minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, disabled veterans and Vietnam Era veterans. The award will presented in Washington at the Labor Department on Thursday, Sept. 17. (NOTE: News release to follow.)

 FAMILY DAYS


Employees' Families & Friends to Visit Lab
 Employees' families and friends will visit otherwise restricted areas of the laboratory this weekend when the lab once again holds its Family Open House days, Sept. 19 and 20. The open house allows visitors to tour facilities and learn about science and technology at special displays and demonstrations presented throughout the site.
